Aren't they going to anyway? Having secret meetings, on either side of the aisle, just raises more questions and opens the conspiracy argument.

What is going to be in the final bill will be public record...and can always be amended or changed. There is nothing sinister to this...other than the Republicans are holding out hope that they might be able to somehow derail the bill from ever getting signed by the President. They are desperate because when reform succeeds, they will come out of this as the obstructionists that they are... and the voters will respond.

Obama did rather lay himself open for these types of inane attacks though by promising a 'different way of doing government business' without explaining the mechanism he proposed to use to ensure transparency so that he can keep pointing the dissenters at the 'obvious' door or indeed laying a foundation for a system to be introduced that demands transparency no matter who is in office. I have therefore little sympathy when this type of thing happens, however much I want health care reform - which I do.

One simple reason .......They have not a clue what is in the bill themselves. What would america say when they have to drag the lobbyst in to discuss what to leave in or out.

Republicans have done the same...as it is typical in the final stages of a bill. Right Wingers complaining when the Dems do it is funny.

Republicans weren't invited, and they complained that the Democrats intended to deliberate behind closed doors — though lawmakers often do so in the final stages of such complex legislation.
