This is the most descriptive. My SS card, being an US-born USC, has nothing stamped on it. I don't need any other work authorization to work in the US.

Your card states that you can work "with work authorization" meaning you need something else besides this SS card to work. That something else is the EAD or GC. Very simple?

That's true Baron but even as a USC you need to provide something other than a SS card to prove you are a citizen...birth certificate or passport for example. The SS administration is not the government agency that authorizes people to work. DHS does that. It really doesn't matter what is stamped on a SS card (or not stamped) we ALL need work authorization.

VERMONT! I Reject Your Reality...and Substitute My Own!

The SS card does not and cannot authorize work. It is not a valid work authorization document, not even for a citizen.

If you have unrestricted SSN card THAT IS a work authorization document, but unlike a U.S. passport you need to provide along with it an identity document like your driver's license.

What SSA told you is not totally true. If you got your SSN card as an F-1 I would assume you have a restricted card and you would need an EAD card (Form I-766) to work. If by chance you were issued an unrestricted SSN card, that along with your driver's license can be used as authorization to work. However, as a K-1 you shouldn't have an unrestricted SSN card, so you would be using a document you are not entitled to have as a K-1. Now would you get caught, probably not, but you are taking a chance.

1. Aliens Work Authorized Without Specific DHS Authorization

The following sections list nonimmigrants, by alien class of admission codes, who are authorized to work in the U.S. without specific authorization from DHS. The person’s I-94 will not have the DHS employment authorization stamp and the alien will generally not have an EAD.

NOTE: Although aliens listed under a class of admission in RM 00203.500C.1. of this section are work authorized without specific DHS authorization, employers may still ask for an EAD before the alien can start working.

Depending on your visa, you may currently have the ability to work without an EAD. However, once you file your AOS (I-485) you require an EAD to work. A K-1 visa will allow you to work without an EAD until you have a pending AOS.
