Hi all,

I just want to know if i should fill out on a blank piece of paper as to why i'm unemployed for the G-325A form? Long story short, I have been looking after my parents for many years, my mum passed away a few years ago & now I look after my father full time as he needs 24hr care. I am looking for employment & getting something sorted with family members to help with further care for my father.

Any advice will be appreciated..

We first met online 2004, but things started to get serious in Dec 2007. Made my first visit to the USA in march 2008 for 2 weeks. Then returned again in Aug 2008 for 3 months.. Then i came back to the UK for 5 months to return back to the USA April 2009 for another 3months.

With me it wasnt an issue as I'm the beneficiary. I lost my job at the end of June and my interview was in August. I had also been unemployed sporadically and at one stage for over 6 months. I was never asked about it. Only the sponsors employment matters really. They might as at the interview but I doubt it.

No stress :D

Ooooo yes and no.

As long as you are 125% over the poverty line you're fine.

If you're NOT over the poverty line then you will need a co-sponsor.

If you don't work, you could have assets that cover the 125%... (say a trust fund, house etc)

No - while the G-325A is a biographical information form - there is no reason to include a separate reason/explanation for an unemployment period - you could however list your 'unemployed' period (the time you've been taking care of your parents and were not otherwise employed) as something like "Family Caregiver From/To" (or similar) since that is what you've been doing. Be sure to not leave any unexplained gaps in the timeframe they're asking about.

Another example might be; if a person was not working but was a student during a certain period of time, they would list it as "Student From/To." (I know at least one lady - not Karin - who listed "Mom From/To" for at least a portion of the time period being asked about.) :star:

Otto's advice is good. Why you're not working doesn't really matter (as you have the co-sponsor) but I know I too would feel better if I wrote "Family carer for #" on a form instead of "unemployed". Just like "mother" or "housewife" look better than "i sit around the house while my husband supports us 'cause I don't have my EAD yet:(" which is my personal situation.

There are no "why" questions on the G325a. If not employed, simply indicate those time periods.

Financial sponsorship is a separate issue dealt with later in the process using the I-134 and again after marriage using the I-864. When it comes to income, again there are only how much and where questions, no "why" questions. You either qualify or find a sponsor who does.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

No explanation needed. Fill out the form and answer the questions. If you have been unemployed, just say so. No problem.
