Nina Ballerina -- I guess I'm curious as to why you pinpoint being spanked as a child as the sole/ most important factor in your cousins and you (and your sister) ending up in different places. Of all the things that can happen in twenty very long years, I think it's a bit too much (and a fair bit amusing) to determine spanking as a cause of this discrepancy in your family member's behavior. People take different trajectories and end up in different points -- most call that living life.

Agreed.. Spanking is not the only factor that determines one's life. I was just making a counter-argument against those who were saying "look I got spanked and I turned out alright"... And also, another point I was trying to make was that good & well-behaved kids dont always turn out to be good & well-behaved adults.

Ha, for those parents that been through raising kids, would take a dozen toddlers to one teenager. But after reading these posts, feel the next time I take care of my granddaughter will pound the ####### out of her. No way in hell, I can see a little of me in her and delighted she likes to get into everything to learn, but there to guide her. She and others like her are really the only thing that I am leaving behind on this earth. Want her to have fond memories of her grandpa, and hope to live long enough to see her get married.

Feel what led my own mom to an early grave was working in a childrens' burn ward, I have no idea how she put up with that, but was a strong warning to me what happens when parents don't watch their kids.

You don't need Slim to come straighten out your kids and grandkids then Nick? Seeing as how he was offering and all... ;)

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Young children spanked by their parents may grow up to be happier and more successful than those who have never been hit, a study has found.

Not sure if I agree with that!

Lets keep it real now... of course you are not going to spank a kid who gets into things because she wants to "learn"

What do you do when she bites her sister on the face for the third time?

Chuckle because she reminds you of yourself?

A spanking on the butt will do for sure ! But I don't have kids, so I can't say if that's right these days, just what I would probably have done if it was my kid.

I also agree with the "threat to" spank idea.

My one uncle was the worst with this, after doing something wrong he would pull out this wooden plank with a smiley face on one side and a sad face on the other side... and sit you down in private somewhere. I can't remember the exact details of the whole shpiel he gave before the spanking - I'm sure it was explaining why he was gonna do it etc. but that part was definetely way worse than the actual spanking... so old skool, lol

I cannot say whether it's a good or bad thing, I think kids are so different that one method of punishment will not work for all of them, but parents do in the heat of a moment where the kid is misbehaving instinctively grab the kid and spanks, I don't think that's wrong, as long as it's not done in public and is on the butt and for a very good reason... I cannot judge them because it's such a natural reaction and so hard to contain...

That is not the sort of study that can have enough controls in place to isolate and assess cause/effect properly. I am sure if it's possible to create a study that does show the cause/effect to make the case for or against spanking by such studies to be quite honest. However, if you look at how young children react to various situations, you will also know that spanking for social behavioural infractions does not teach them how to behave. It might be good if you want to associate pain with a dangerous situation, but trying to condition for all situations is problematic. Essentially, children need to learn consequences and if the only consequence they learn to respect is spanking, you will run into trouble as they get older.

You're too smart for your own good. :P
