Should I close my Canadian credit cards...

I was an RBC customer in Canada and in the U.S. (have since closed the Canadian account) but anyhoo. I see no reason why, if you are looking to say, buy a house, that you couldn't apply for a mortgage with RBC - they will use your Canadian credit rating as part of the equation. Sure couldn't hurt to at least apply with them when the time comes to buy!

So this thread reminded me to call TD today to get things organized and I asked about my Visa again and the gentleman I got this time said I can keep it open no problem, the guy I had last time told me I would need to close it out if I'm moving perminantly. So confused lol.

His other job is probably working the 1-800 line at USCIS!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Me too! I really like them, have banked with them for a long time. But they are slow sometimes and we are looking at mortgages and now it looks like we might be doing that with CIBC - just because TD is so slow.

I have a CIBC Visa and multiple accounts with them. I had no issues when moving; they just required the date I would be considered a US resident and my new address. I use the CDN VISA whenever I visit Canada and pay it off using online banking. Same with Bank of Montreal.

Surprised to hear about the difficulties with TD. My husband (both CDN and US citizen) has accounts with TD. We have found their service excellent. He has had no problems with keeping his accounts open and up to date and has been in the US since '92. He updates his accounts once a year and they are more than helpful even when he is not in his home branch.

ah, good to know. I actually called them awhile ago and was told no problem with moving to the US. Good to hear/read that that is the case. They've actually been a good bank, actually. They ran around like maniacs to accommodate me with some stuff last year and it was might nice of them. For a bank, that is.

Presidents' Choice, however... they're not so accommodating but I have no credit cards with them, just a savings account so I won't be missing them too much. Their fee plan was amazing though. Like NO fees.

Ditto. I've had no problems with TD at all.
