Obama effigy hanged in Jimmy Carter's home town

The US Secret Service says it is investigating after an effigy of Barack Obama was found hanging in the home town of former President Jimmy Carter.

TV footage showed the doll hanging by a noose in front of a red, white and blue sign that reads "Plains, Georgia. Home of Jimmy Carter, our 39th President".

Witnesses said the effigy had President Obama's name on it.

Plains Mayor L.E. Godwin III said the fire department had been called to take it down.

In Washington, US Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan confirmed that the agency was investigating the case.

One Plains resident said the Secret Service had already interviewed local people.

"We wish it hadn't happened. It's not the kind of publicity the town of Plains likes," Jan Williams, who runs a hotel, was quoted as saying by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

She described Plains, which has a population of fewer than 700 people, as a "nice, quiet town".

But hanging world leaders in effigy is almost a cliche. Shooting an AK-47 or crashing an airplane into the Whitehouse doesn't even compare.

As the O/P noted in the photo...why wasn't such a big deal made of GWB being hung in effigy with the nation's capitol in the background? What makes hanging BHO any more significant or different? Plains, GA is a long way from both the Whitehouse and the physical location of the president.

This particular reaction by the Secret Service seems to be an overreaction when the whole picture is taken into consideration. Not that I give a sh!t one way or the other, but I would think the Secret Service would have bigger fish to fry than this. You gotta wonder how much this federal response cost the taxpayer considering the realistic threat level. This big hoopla seems to be more symbolic than substantive. Seems like a local matter more than one that needs federal intervention.

Quite. As if Danno et al have some special knowledge of the workings of the FBI and how seriously each threat is taken and can then assess these threats using the 'comparison table of presidential threat seriousness' to evaluate how much things have changed since the Bush years.

I remember those two incidents. There are loads of nuts out there, hence the SS needs to be very cautious and take all threats seriously. Look at all the nut jobs right here at VJ.
