Spanish language ad on regular TV

Have any of you seen this before? I never noticed it till this evening. Consolidated Credit is advertising on regular English-language channels but the ads are in all Spanish. The only entirely-Spanish ads I've seen prior to this evening have been on Spanish channels.

Is this some kind of new trend?

I know plenty of people whose first language is Spanish, but who have varying degrees of fluency in English. All the Spanish speakers I know understand the fact that, in the US, you've got to speak English to get ahead, and so they all try to do improve their English when they have the opportunity. Many will watch English TV for language practice. Some of them watch it exactly like you watch it, but they just don't understand it quite as well as you do. Some of them will keep the closed captions on (in English or in Spanish), to help with comprehension. Some US-English TV shows also have a simultaneous Spanish audio track on SAP, so someone with no knowledge whatsoever of English may still be watching that program that you're watching in English, only they're hearing it in Spanish.

Any of these people may be more able to understand and respond to an advertisement in Spanish, so it's no surprise that some advertisers go to their target customers where their target customers may be found.

Living in S. Florida I dont even notice it anymore... However, I think it is purely to boost the bang for the buck with marketing... For many Latinos here, I know that it is not necessarily a matter of NOT understanding English, but what is easier to understand. When I lived in Italy, I am fluent in Italian and understand it, however, when things were explained in English it was sooo much faster.

I understand and speak Spanish so it is not a huge issue for me, and I guess I have no problem with bi-lingual commercials. Looking at it from a data standpoint, Spanish will serve many to learn in the near future... so the more exposure to the language I think the better.

I spend a bit of time in Switzerland with family and there are shows and commercials in Swiss German (different than regular German), German, Italian, French, English, Arabic and Turkish... It is such a multi-cultural country it is not looked at strangly for there to be a big mix of languages and everyone speaks 2-3 languages (if not more)
