Does your wife think the US is too cold ?

My wife arrived from Cebu with me on December 16. It was about 50 degrees on the breezeway at Dulles when we arrived and deplaned and she was COLD! HAHAHA - I laughed with her!!. So I was also a bit worried about how she would adjust to the weather. But since then she has been totally tested and has passed with flying colors!! On December 18 (day 2) we received 20 inches of snow with wind where we live in Maryland. A record snow for the area and her first snow ever. We walked and enjoyed the snow and took lots of pics. On December 24 (day 8) while we were visiting family in Iowa we received a 16 inch snow with some ice and very cold. On January 1 (day 14) while visiting more family in Idaho we received a 16 inch snow that was very heavy and wet. Through all of this Gladys was excited to see the snow and experience the change in temperature. We have been walking and sledding and built a snowman, had a snow ball fight and played for hours - and she has enjoyed it all and has not really been cold at all. Now we are traveling in Wisconsin and have seen temperatures of -15 F (and lots more snow)!! She has not complained and has simply dressed warmer and learned to adjust to the conditions. In fact I think she is more adjusted to the climate this winter than I am!! (However, her feet are very cold at night when she gets into bed - WHOA!!)

Food has been just ok for her. It has been difficult to get her the foods she likes while we are traveling, but we are doing our best. She is also struggling to adjust to the cold dry air of winter in the North. We use a humidifier and saline nasal spray which helps.

So the moral is that if your wife is happy and excited to be here she will have no trouble adjusting to the colder weather.

Agreed. I am happy and excited when I got here. I adjusted great, even felt like I lived here and love the food. MIL says I'm already Americanized minus the winter though (PS: I even find myself humming Star-Spangled banner)...:)

My wife freezes outside, and cant get her to play in the snow really, but then she is also pregnant and not feeling the greatest these days from that too. But we did have fun getting dressed up and taking a SHORT walk in the snow. I made sure to bundle her up real good so she wouldnt feel cold. She went back to Manila for 3.5 weeks in December, but complained it is too hot there. I think she is happier with cooler weather these days than the hot weather. See attached pictures.

Nice pictures. When Meryll was missing the Philippines over a year ago she asked two long time US resident filipinas if they wanted to move back. To her surprise they both said no it is too hot there. :jest:

Update on going sledding. The saucer broke in the cold yesterday. The local stores were sold out of sleds.

When I got here in US... it was 68 degrees F... and I'm used to 88 to 90 degrees F, made me so sleepy and seemed I am sick for 2-4 weeks. Then I got used in the temperature of until 60 degrees F. When fall started and temperature dropped to 45-50 degrees F, I got sleepy again and started to get used of it. When winter started, temperature dropped to 32 degrees F, I got sleepy until I got used of it. Now the temperature here in my place is between 32 and - 2 degrees F. But, I got used to it and I didn't have any problem in my foot (I got broken ankle before and had operation). I even play in the snow for couple of hours.

I guess your wife gonna be fine. Just get her a nice warm jacket, have your heater works well and have humidifier.

Hey bud, I'd never leave Southern California for Colorado! Can't play golf in Colorado in winter and come to think of it, I played in my shorts yesterday! And today, another mid-70 day in paradise.

My body is shot anyway and I have been in California for 37 years so a change will be nice. I have only played golf once since August. Colorado has some wonderful fishing and beautiful places to just go and watch the clouds go by. I also have an 8" scope that should do quite well up on Grand Mesa at 10,000 feet. We will just spend out winters in the RP!

Yes!!! It is super cold here.

For a Filipina who has lived all her life in a tropical region< YES! USA is cold!!!

I am here in Bakersfield California and the temperature could be as cold as 6 degee F!!! How cold is that??? We do not have snow here but that temperature is enough for me to just crawl underneath the blanket and stay there forever!!!

When I was in the Philippines, I already complain when the temperature goes up to 32 degee C ( sorry, Im used to Celsius) and wish that Philippines is not in the tropics. Now that I am here in the cold, I feel like dying!!! LOL

My body has not adjusted yet and adjustment will take months even years, as I lived in the Philippines for 31 years.

Now, I realized how I love the sun ( though I always used umbrella way back in the Phil) How I love the weather on April and May in the Philippines when It is windy and kids fly kites. I love the feel of the sun in my face during this time. I love the soft breeze in the afternoon when we just sit around outside our house. Now, I can not even go out because I will freeze to death!

Here, if it is not overcast , it is foggy and I could hardly see the sun.

Today, when the sun shone, I went outside ( frontyard) and raked all the dry leaves which covered our lawn. I only went out because the sun was shining and made me warm.

My biggest adjustment is the weather. My husband and I eat different kind of food. Though I eat healthy nowadays ( also even when I was still in the Phil), I still crave for some Filipino food like dried fish, bagoong , fried fish but I could not cook them here, anymore.. LOL!

Everything is okay here, except for the WEATHER!!!!

Sorry guys! I am just speaking as a Filipina who is still not used to this weather.

Madison, WI (Middleton, but whatever same difference)

You ever get over to LaCross for the Oktoberfest in the Fall?

I make it every year.

I know Shirr would like to meet up with another Filipina.

Maybe we can get a bunch together and have a party there.
