right, often.

how about we permit guns "often" but not always? like limit the permits to those without evidence of prior expeirence or training?

Actually people assemble at political meetings, churches and homes all week long, it is very very rare when one needs a permit to assemble.

Likewise I can understand certain rare instances where one should be required to have a permit to bear arms.

there are many situations where permits are required. pretty much any time you interfere with traffic.

good. personally, i think the focus should be on training. make it mandatory. forget the permits or the owner registries, but evidence of training (or experience) should be a requirement to buy.

Stories like this are prime arguments why permits should be required.

depends on what the permit does. if it's a fee payable to some local government, in exchange for a piece of paper, then that doesn't really help. that's just a tax.

if the permit process ensures all permit recipients are trained in safe use or can demonstrate their knowledge through prior experience (military, law enforcement, grew up shooting/hunting), then it might actually help.

Well it would be quite useless if it wasn't tied to some sort of proficiency test/training.

The problem with that semi-logical thought is... Government creep

You and I both know as soon as that legislation was passed "improvements" would be in the works.

I believe the handgun permit process in NJ doesnt check for proficiency. They just want your money but then in this state that's hardly surprising.

That's where States rights on the issue become a bit thorny. It seems that there should be some sort of standard.

For freedom of expression?

I, too, believe in freedom of expression. I very much enjoy shooting my gun into the air, given the chance. And then shooting it at people like you. And then I take a big #######, put it on Jesus, and expect taxpayers like you to pay the pill.

Please let's try to keep this to a friendly discussion without getting ridiculous or offensive. Differences of opinions are fine; ridiculing and insulting differences of opinions is not.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Some opinions deserve ridicule. None expressed on this thread do, but others do.

Examples: the Holocaust is fiction; the moon landing was a hoax; Michelle Obama was born a man; Homosexuals are evil.

There are opinions that deserve ridicule and it is my hope that moderation realizes that :)
