trag⋅e⋅dy  /ˈtrædʒɪdi/ [traj-i-dee] - (noun) - a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster

I think the definition of tragedy is fairly clear.......

Tragedy is definitely overused, and often inappropriately applied. In the broadest sense, any untimely death could be called a tragedy. For some events, tragedy doesn't go far enough. Take the following two examples: The crash of the Alaska Airlines flight over Point Mugu, CA in 2000 was a tragedy. Otoh, the crashes of the American and United Airlines flights on 9/11/2001 were not tragedies, they were atrocities. Natural disasters and accidents are tragedies. An act of human evil is an atrocity. The proper emotional response to a tragedy is sadness and grief. The proper response to an atrocity is anger, and only secondarily sadness and grief.

My primary point was.... this was a rare yet preventable death of a child, not unlike many others.

why does this story make the news cycle (and cause such emotion) and the many other similar deaths (by other means) don't?Perhaps this one is interesting in that.... it is so random... it's like the lottery in reverse. (expect one need not buy a ticket.)

And, a gun was involved.

I've moved on ... long ago ...this fishin hole is dry ...

 You're the one who dug the fishing hole, filled it with water & fish & then caught them! You rambled on for pages about a minor issue (type of round fired) & now won't admit your responsibility for the red herring. News flash: A kid is dead because of a stray round... that's the story, period.

if it was really irrelevant, you'd not have commented on it.

as to why it was important, i answered that, only to be told i was baiting. i'm sure if someone mangled some specific fact that involved english history, you'd be on that too in order to set the record straight.

Erm no. I commented on it because I thought it was irrelevant. Hence my question.

It was an honest question I thought. But whatever.

It's one sentence in the story that hardly deserves the attention that it has received & has thus detracted from the main issue (a dead boy killed due to negligence/ stupidity). That is pretty much the textbook definition of a red herring.

and the fallacy of that one statement should be ignored?

I'm not ignoring the rest of the story ... and yes this is something that should not have happened. Now what about finding the perp and putting this person behind bars? How should this crime be solved/ prosecuted?

Its a question of emphasis. The emphasis in that story is on the boy and that celebratory gunfire on new years causes death and injury.

Everything else is speculative, and the reporter makes very clear that it is. No it isn't the best example of written news, but it isn't hysterical anti gun propaganda either.

I can't comment as to how it's solved, but I would wager a guess that investigating. As to prosecuting the case, it will really depend on to be determined circumstances. It could be classified negligence, criminally negligent homicide, or even depraved indifference if they wanted to make an example of the person.

It seems like a number of people still can't 'get' the reason why this story was posted and keep getting caught up in irrelevancies. I am exercising my prerogative as the original poster of this thread and closing it.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
