I have finally heard Couric explain the 'interview' with Palin and she had no ulterior motive when asking that question and is still astonished at Palin's reaction to it.

You can't do that in a spontaneous interview - which is why so many interviews with famous/influential people are conditional on the list of questions being pre-determined.
