listened to my wifes comments about the 18 month work permits for illegal alien haitians ... she wonders why permits were not given to peoples of other country's that suffered bad things the past year ...

anyone have a good answer as to why Haiti gets special treatment?

I don't know but I think it has something to do with it happening on such a large scale... And the amount of Haitian immigrants we have in this country.

Quite a few years back, I remember the govt granting asylum to many, many El Salvadorian immigrants a lot who were already here illegally.

asylum due to a natural disaster ... how many natural issues happened in the past 5 years .... how many peoples did we grant free reign with anchor baby potential?

No El Salvador was because of political reasons I think ... I'd have to double check, my sons' uncle was one of those who got asylum but I didn't get the whole story. I know there were massacres in their country and serious political oppression.

I really feel for the Haitian people though, my poor friend I can't even begin to imagine how she's feeling can't get in touch with her mom, no idea if she's even alive... Not to mention grieving over the family members sahe knows are dead and her home destroyed.

she has many friends in favelas ... so destitute, bad food/water/crime/health services are normal ...

Yeah the favelas in Brazil are like the serros in Peru, its like going up a big hill. The houses don't have floors usually and no roof unless they're lucky.

No running water they have it delivered and put in barrels but the delivery guys sometimes won't go up there cuz they're afraid to get robbed.

Luis comes from a family that does ok - but he knows people from those areas and says its scary as hell

It's political. Makes for great PR. There were earthquakes in Pakistan, China and, of course, poverty cases.

I don't think that the anchor baby issue is the biggest problem, that only muddies the water and obscures the issue of the selective dispensation of the visas for the poor. Why should some disasters have precedence over others? Are all men (and women) not created equal?
