Of the 17 I graded there were NO dead words! I am so proud of them. Granted, there are many more to grade.

I didn't take a great many writing courses and I don't recall an official dead words list but for my edification could you be so kind as to relate what, based on your techings, the dead word list is in this context. What words do you consider dead words?

It changes based on the assignment, but there are a few basic words. We had a little ritual at the beginning of the school year in which they had to make tombstones for the words :lol:

I pick words from the first two writing assignments which are over-used and add a few from year's past.

Here's my recent list:

Pretty ugly stuff things said says

Nice unhappy happy hate like new

A lot scared fast slow love tell

dark also fun so good fun

but lots very much

And all variations of the verb "to be"

That's actually one of our alternate words. They had to come up with 5 synonyms for each of the dead words. :lol:

I don't teach Brit Lit anymore so they're safe! This is a Creative Writing class and I want them to think bigger. Vary their vocabularies. Hell, I'll take made up words over the over-used words any day.
