I don't think so. There's a big list of things you can't have.

I question some of the things you can't have. Kind of like Susita pointing out that Greek women did not stop eating Feta. Have we gone to far to the 'safe' side?

I ask this because I think we have caused serious side effects with some of our clean habits now. For example, we are so careful to wash/sanitize to the nth degree now. When I grew up, you almost never saw nut allergies (or any other allergies, for that matter). My mother kept our house clean, but not sanitized. The Thanksgiving turkey was kept in the cold room for days downstairs, not the fridge because there was no room for it, and none of us ever got food poisoning ever in our lives! I think we have screwed up our bodies by NOT allowing any chances for it to fight off germs and bacteria and such. We do not allow ourselves to get sick, so when we do, it just completely messes with us. And the bugs are getting stronger, and drug resistant, because we take so many OTC drugs to stay 'healthy'.

I should have put this in the rant thread. Sorry.

I am usually pretty laid back and it is hard to annoy me.. But people being down on their luck is a very touchy subject for me because I used to cook for a homeless shelter. Working there was such an enriching experience because I met so many wonderful people there. Most of them staying at the shelter were normal folks like us who were just temporarily down on their luck... and it is sobering to know that it could happen to anyone of us no matter how well we plan for our future.

I remember this one guy I met who was there with his 4 year old son.. His wife had a drug problem and got busted by the cops. She was order by the court to go to rehab, but in the meantime CPS got involved and threatened to take away their son if she was there living under the same roof. So this guy was living in a homeless shelter with his son because he didnt want his son taken away, and at the same time wanted to make sure that his wife was safe at home instead of living on the streets. It was such a heartbreaking story.

End of Rant..

When we were unemployed, which was for more than 16 mos for both of us, we had so little. It was basically by the Grace of God and family that we made it. We were so poor that based on my 2007 tax return we would have been considered about 50% of the median Low-to-Moderate Income in our area. Considering that I work on a government program that does community development for LMI beneficiaries, I got a chuckle that I would have ironically qualified for our program.

Val, it's basically all 'soft' cheeses since there is a chance they will have bacteria on them. I agree with you, though, that we are becoming WAY too over clean and it's going to cause a lot of problems.

Drug addiction was what ended it between my ex and I. I couldn't have my children around someone like that, even if deep down he was a good person. His father committed suicide and his brother was murdered all in the span of 1 1/2 years and this is how he chose to deal with it. This man was nice to help his wife, but I say that if his wife didn't have it in her to get help for herself (and not be court-mandated to go) to be a better mother to her child, then she doesn't deserve what her husband did for her.

My ex has an undiagnosed mental illness.. He couldnt deal with life changes like a new job, new house, etc..Whenever life throws him a curve ball, he'd crash and (instead of drugs) turn to alcohol and porn. It was like Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde... I still cant understand how a nice man turn into such a monster. But like you said "this how he chose to deal with it".

They say no lunch meat, either. I had a salami sandwich for lunch (OK, fine, TWO) even though I know I shouldn't. I have only heard of listeria in lunch meat once, that boondoggle with Maple Leaf last year. And even then, it was pretty rare to get it. It just gets overblown by the media. However, I have (mostly) accepted that, while pregnant, it is better to be safe than sorry. I'm not just risking myself anymore.

I took a nap.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.
