Vladimir Putin says Russia's population rising

_47011777_008366573-1.jpg

Vladimir Putin announced the news in a televised government meeting

Russia's population statistics are rising for the first time since 1995, says Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Mr Putin said that for the past five years the number of deaths had declined, while births had risen.

He said statistics to be released shortly would show life-expectancy had almost reached the age of 69.

As president, Mr Putin brought in policies to stop population decline, which has been blamed on emigration, alcoholism, and poor health care.

'Symbolic amount'

"We can say with a high degree of confidence that Russia will register a growth in population for the first time since 1995," said Mr Putin at an end-of-year government meeting broadcast on state television.

His spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the total anticipated population growth in 2009 was only about 20,000 - but he said this was a "symbolic" amount.

Health Minister Tatyana Golikova said the first month of population growth in 15 years came in August this year, when the birth rate increased by 1,000.

Figures published in November said Russia's population stood at 141.9 million.

FWIW, My wife doesn't believe it but then again, Russians tend to see the vodka glass half-empty.

Speaking of Vodka.... I noticed they are raising the minimum price on each bottle in an effort to cut back on the ungodly amount of deaths due to Alcohol each year.

I'm wondering if you understand the difference between emigration and birth rates?

Or perhaps I missed your point.

(which is always a real possibility)

So how exactly does that thread tie into a rising birth rate in Russia ?

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

The government is paying women to have kids over there. - It was a program Putin started when he was president.

Not to mention the fact that they get something like 140 days of paid maternity leave.

Of course, saying their population is growing is like saying our recession is over.

"On Monday, Russian President Medvedev honored parents with extremely big families by giving them the "Order of Parental Glory", which the Moscow News describes as "part of a campaign to halt dramatic population decline".

Medvedev decorated the proud parents with the Parental Glory medal he instituted by decree last year — a golden two-headed eagle on a red field backed by a blue cross. "You have created happy, unique families — big, friendly families — and I want to thank all of you," Medvedev said at the ceremony, prominently broadcast on state-run TV newscasts."

Nothing wrong with that, when we spend millions to preserve some rare field rat or on some endangered snail, I guess taking steps to make the population in a country stable make sense.

It seems like just a decade ago the experts were claiming Russia was passing the tipping point, whereby the decline would not be stoppable.

LOL...the title of the BBC article read "Putin says..."

Putin is a lying **** in imo, not to mention Russia's population rides mainly on the price of oil. When the oil goes...so does Russia. Russia's economy lives and dies on it's natural resources.

If Tsar Putin and his KGB/FSB cronies gave two craps about Russia and it's population it would start cleaning up it's act as far as government corruption, white slavery, dirty thieving police, booze, drugs, etc... The Stalin loving Kremlin did hike up the price of vodka...taxes...but Russians being Russians...they will just start making more of their own at home. This "give the mothers a medal farce" is just that...a farce. Putin and Medvedev have bank accounts that would blow you away....yet they keep on nationalizing Russian business there not to mention they have a bad habit of chasing off foreign investors when their not too busy that is murdering journalist and human rights workers.

I wish our government would pay people with good, stable families. We seem to have it backwards - we pay the broken homes with too many kids. Perhaps we should incentivize two-parent homes?

It seems like just a decade ago the experts were claiming Russia was passing the tipping point, whereby the decline would not be stoppable.

Alcoholism and HIV are still going to be the wild cards. They can claim more births all they want, but unless they can figure out a way to stop the spread of HIV and lessen the effects of alcoholism, they're going to spiral out of control in a few years.

Sounds pretty familiar, actually. And no I'm not talking about what my wife's told me of the old USSR, I'm talking about what we've seen come out of Chicago recently.
