From what I've read (no personal experience here) NVC can be nerds about things like that. They are overly picky and often aren't aware of their own guidelines. So if the NVC rejected your local police check then I'm not to surprised. As far as Montreal is concerned a local check that indicates it has covered all of Canada is sufficient. Mine didn't even say RCMP and CPIC just "Canada wide name check" and they accepted it without a problem.

Ali- I'm not really sure about yours. In looking at it, it seems perfectly fine and acceptable but I have no idea why they would put that stamp. I would think it doesn't make a difference.

Absolutely Becky, not slighting you at all or your experience/how you handled it - it's good for us to discuss things like this - it adds to our knowledge. USCIS etc etc - they vary in their opinions from time to time and if we don't talk about it we can't debunk the truth from the - non-truths.

NVC and USCIS are two different entities, so i'm not sure which one we are talking about?

A local police certificate is just fine, that is true, however it must say the right things on it, they must do the correct check.

Ali, your certificate looks very similar to the one my Husband got from the Calgary Police Service - I have no idea what that stupid stamp is - it makes no sense.

It's definitely got to stem from you entering an Australian address, Ali. Is there a specific reason you entered a travelling address? You may want to go back to them and ask. Perhaps they could do another without the notation..... or at least provide a written explanation for why they did that so you can show them at the interview if they ask.

Yes, that's probably it no doubt (the Australian address).

If it comes up at the interview, why not just explain you lived in Australia for a short period of time but you weren't there for longer than 6 months and therefore don't require a police check?

I entered the address because that's where I "lived" while I was travelling ... all of my mail etc went there, and I had put that address on all of my USCIS paperwork with no problem. I think I will call the Police Information Check unit here in Edmonton today to clarify, because if this stupid stamp ends up causing a problem for me I am going to be majorly TO'd!

Thanks for your input :)

I was there for 9 months ... there is a working holiday visa in my passport and entry/exit stamps that prove I was there for less than 12 months though, so according to the USCIS website I don't require a police check from Australia. Darn EPS and their stupid stamp!

Now that I'm thinking about this again it seems like I'm blowing it out of proportion but I just don't want to go all the way there and then get asked to provide more evidence for something so silly!

Hi!

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I thought I should ask in this thread than create a new one.

My American Fiancee and I received our NOA2 on Dec 21, so Ive been figuring out what information I need before the package 3 arrives.

Where the police check/certificate is concerned, I lived in BC for most of my life, but the last 10 have been in Ontario, should I just be able to go to my local Peel Regional police for the document I need? Or do I have to sign up for that 120 day wait for the RCMP search? Being this far along and seeing that it might take 4 months JUST for the police check with RCMP sort of felt like a punch to the stomach :(

Hi and welcome,

No need for the 120 day RCMP check - unless you have a criminal record. That 120 day estimate is for a fingerprint version only - no criminal record, no fingerprints required.

You can go to your local police station or to the RCMP to request the CPIC name check.

More info on exactly what you need is here.
