Businessmen and women take part in telephone conference calls wearing pyjamas, underwear - or nothing at all, according to a new study.

BT found that the most popular place to call into a conference was from the bedroom, followed by the bathroom, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Some of the 200 people surveyed said they had called into an audio conference from a train or a car, although more bizarre locations included a ski slope, a beach and a theme park.

The study also said that people taking part in conference calls could hear babies crying, dogs barking, kettles boiling or toilets flushing in the background.

BT estimated it cut out out more than 700,000 face-to-face meetings in 2008 thanks to conferencing, saving 1.4 million journeys.

Aaron McCormack, chief executive of BT Conferencing, said: "More people using conferencing is good news for all of us.

"It brings together any number of people from almost anywhere in the world. It cuts travelling time, costs and CO2 emissions and can assist us all to maintain a sensible work-life balance."

Bathroom? That's desperate. The bedroom I can understand.

I've done that. I used to get woken up in the middle of the night for support calls when a server went down. Sometimes you are on the phone for 2-3 hours at a stretch until the problem can be resolved. You're at home, just woken up from bed, in your jammies, with the cellphone stuck to your ear. No kidding you're gonna go and brew a pot of coffee, take a leak, and get settled in for the duration. It's bad enough to be awake and on the phone, you might as well at least be comfortable and not have your bladder burst.
