and the transcript:

CANDY CROWLEY: So, just to finish up on the question-- I do want to talk to you about security measures -- but do you think -- has there been any evidence of the Al Qaida ties that this suspect has been claiming? NAPOLITANO: Right now, that is part of the criminal justice investigation that is ongoing, and I think it would be inappropriate to speculate as to whether or not he has such ties.

What we are focused on is making sure that the air environment remains safe, that people are confident when they travel. And one thing I'd like to point out is that the system worked. Everybody played an important role here. The passengers and crew of the flight took appropriate action. Within literally an hour to 90 minutes of the incident occurring, all 128 flights in the air had been notified to take some special measures in light of what had occurred on the Northwest Airlines flight. We instituted new measures on the ground and at screening areas, both here in the United States and in Europe, where this flight originated.

So the whole process of making sure that we respond properly, correctly and effectively went very smoothly.

Nobody cares about "after the fact"...... we want to know how in the HeII a known person with ties to extremist Muslim ideology got a VISA and boarded a plan bound for this country.

I spent over a month getting through NVC's AP/FBI check... And I still dont have my fiance here... there is no way he should have still had a visa if his name was on a list of known possible threats... even if the visa was granted prior, it should have been cancelled immediatly upon the fathers notification to the consulate. The head of security at Disney does a better job keeping people, that dont belong, out ...

I suppose the missed opportunity in preventing this potential disaster is what is being investigated. That still doesn't change the fact that, contrary to right wing talking points, the Secretary addressed the response to the event in the interview.

You will have to live with the fact that there will never be a point where 100% prevention is achieved. It's impossible. Deep down you know that but you rather display outrage demanding precisely that which in the real world cannot be had.

That's the sobering reality. Although, there is talk of the airlines to begin profiling passengers the way El Al does.

I have no problem with passenger profiling if it indeed increases the security of air travel. Problem with that approach is, though, that those that seek to terrorize will adapt and find ways to work that system, too. If the airlines are out of reach, and that's a big IF, they'll go for lower hanging fruit - mass transit, tunnels, bridges, malls, large buildings, etc...

I agree. Intelligence gathering along with good diplomacy are the most effective methods of prevention.

Which begs the question - why don't they? Why go through all that trouble when you can just walk into a mall and KA-BOOM!

No metal detectors, no security checks, no air marshals.

Thats a question I have asked for years, Terrorist could plant the bomb and walk away.... the need not even be a suicide in many cases.

Sure the plane is dramatic but seeing a mall caved in on its self would be quite a picture too.

Maybe attacking an airplane is a matter of "prestige". Who knows...

It takes very little explosive to bring down a plane. Plus, it much more terrorizing to see a plane go down since people can avoid going to a mall, but they can't avoid the need to travel.

Really? I'd say the opposite is true for most people - you can avoid air travel, but you still need to go to the mall every now and then.

You can rail on about "talking points" all you want but we can all see this woman is trying to "spin" to the point of absurdity.

Sure Obama sets the tone for security but I don't blame him, I blame the department which should have prevented this.

This wasn't even anything new or inventive, we all knew this was a real danger (Chemical compounds) when they took our suntan lotion and perfume away.

This story is not as much to do with how he wanted to blow up the plane but that he actually had a visa and arrived on American soil.

Why are we ok with using profiling to catch serial killers but we are not acting on consistent "tags" which would be our best friend in preventing a lot of this?

When enough bombs have successfully gone off, we will bury the dead and rethink this retarded logic.
