I will only apply for citizenship in September but I just finished reading the Guide (http://www.uscis.gov/files/article/M-476.pdf) in order to find out the documents I will need to submit in September (and check if I need to start saving and keeping some of them)/ If I understood correct, I do not need to submit all that paperwork to prove I am married like I did for the I-751.

My case will be fairly simple. I am happily married (and hope to continue so), I haven't been out of the US for trips longer than 6 months, my husband is a US citizen by birth, we don't have children yet, I have never been arrested, etc. It seems I have 3 options to submit proof of continuing marriage and I will most likely pick the 3rd one "An IRS tax return transcript for the last three years".

So, that's it? Am I missing something? I don't need to submit copies of bank accounts, joint leases, joint assets, etc for the last 3 years?

I just don't want to be caught off-guard when September comes and I don't have all the documents needed...

Thanks!

Hi NycBra,

For Naturalization, generally this is what the USCIS wants, evidence-wise, to enclose in your application:

Document Checklist for Form N-400, Application for Naturalization

http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis/men...00048f3d6a1RCRD

Just submit whatever you have and/or is applicable to you from this list and you should be ok there..

For example, with mainly just the application form, application fee, copy of your green card, 2 passport photos, tax returns/transcript, the marriage certificate, your spouse's proof of US Citizenship, as evidence....

Other have submitted with just only those pieces of paperwork, and have had their cases based on marriage approved.....

I, on the other hand, went the "better safe than sorry" approach, submitting 95+ pages worth of evidence, just as many documents as I did for the I-751, as you can read about here as to what I submitted exactly for my N-400:

N-400: Ant’s Naturalization Evidence and Information Submitted (3 year marriage rule)…, Is this enough evidence?...

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...=218133&hl=

But this much eveidence is not manditory, and you don't have to submit all of this.

Your case sounds pretty straight-forward, so you should have no problems....

Hope this helps. Good luck with the rest of your journey in September too.

Ant

I-485 . . . oh my God. Heart pounding.

I-751 . . . easier, still annoying.

N-400 . . . just a formality.

You don't have to prove anything but the fact that you are still married to your spouse and that you live together. Basically, that's covered by submitting jointly filed income tax returns/manuscripts.

I really don't think you need anything else, and there's no merit in complicating things for no reason. Also keep in mind that the N-400 is all about you, you, and you alone, not your spouse and you.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Bob, I like your description above. That's exactly how I felt since I filled everything out for my nonUSC hubby ;)

Thanks. Good to know I can just sit, relax and wait for September to come. Most of our bills are paid online and it is a pain to have to print all of it (and very against environment sustainability).

I will keep checking the forum for some insights. I learned, for example, that I cannot travel abroad after the oath and before acquiring a US passport, but I can after the interview and before the oath.... This place is really full of resources!
