Strange. I get that too.

So she emails them, but generally is pretty guarded and skeptical about their intentions. One woman (not from the site) that she was friends with for years just straight up asked her to buy clothes and shoes for her kid and bring it with her to Ukraine last fall. My wife was shocked and has limited contact now.

Vika visits that site often, and has recently reconnected with several ex-classmates. She says that she finds it strange that people who never wanted to talk with her when they sat next to her in class, and even some who didn't like her, are now eager to write and chat.

I have the same situation with facebook, people I barely knew or talked to in school now want to add me to their friends list.

I fail to see what the point of that is.

That's why I made my profile private on both sites. Cannot stand that people treat those sites like popularity contest.

Good point. Here in RUB, we tend to :o when there are serious questions about a petition, or turn on the emergency lights when there is a delay I think because it is rare. Assuming the applicant has a clean record and the paperwork is complete and filled out correctly, COs in Ukraine and Russia have a pretty good track record for approval. Petitions from Belarus have a few more hoops to jump through because of Uncle Sasha, but compared to the Phillipines or some Far East Consulates, still an easy journey.

But the USEManila hands out visas like water, so I just cant make sense of your reference here. HCMC, China, Korea, very difficult. Philippines very easy.

I was making reference to the stories here on VJ about the (sounds to me like) convoluted process to get a visa in the PI. There seem to be some administrative processes that aren't the same as the embassy in Ukraine uses, and I read lots of references to USCs not being allowed into the interview itself. I won't argue that there aren't lots of visas issued, and the PI forum seems to take process or paperwork issues in stride. I do think that (based again only on what I have read here on VJ) that the process is a bit more open at the US Embassy in Kiev.

Vika seems to be slowly finding girlfriends on her own. She is being extremely cautious, as she is still questioning the motives of people who she runs into at school or the store. I think it is a healthy thing, as she refuses to try to form a friendship solely on the basis of a shared first language.
