Hello there, anybody knows how to find friends? Can't find any websites. I am talking about those who came to the US on a K1/K3/whatever visa. What makes it hard at the moment is that we live a small town of Ventura, Ca. But it's so close to LA. How do I find real (as opposed to virtual) friends among those Russian women who came to the US? Anybody here from LA area? Pls let me know what you think. I miss the hearty communication in my language..

Maybe you could try this website. http://www.russianla.com/ My wife hasn't been able to find any Russian friends either even though there is a big Russian population in the Seattle/Tacoma area.

Katya has found 3 or 4 people already in Aurora, Colorado. She actually found one by going into Skype and typing in city/state and nationality. While there were a few dozen names listed, she only contacted one person that way: a lady who had the exact same birthdate; so the Skype thing was sort of a lark.

Her other method has been using a russian-language equivalent of this website. I will have to ask her for the URL when I get home; but it's essentially a visajourney.com for russian speakers. She asked if there was anyone in Aurora; and she had a couple responses.

Her other link to Russian folk has been a nice, if expensive, Deli run by some lovely Russian folk. It's constantly filled with other native Russians and she has struck up a few conversations with folk there. They appeared to be idle conversations; but it is another way for her to potentially meet real folk in our city.

Alena found one at Ross. One at the beach. Another at the restaurant. She talks to others at the local russian food market. We even have a Ukrainian hair dresser.

But she gets rather jealous of other russian women in America. I kind of get jealous of American guys over there so I can understand that.

There is a good chance your city has a higher population than our entire state. My wife has found perhaps a dozen Russian speaking friends in our very small area. She met a few at her English classes, and they introduced her to others. None were found online. Most are Russian/Ukrainian/Belarussian women with American husbands, there are a couple with Russian husbands. we seem to always be getting invited or having one of them over for dinner, birthday's etc. Alla also keeps busy visiting one or another several times per week.

We live in a pretty small town in a low populated county, but we have about 60 Russian speaking wives in our small county in Northern California. Generally is starts by finding one Russian speaker and it mushrooms from there. We met one woman that had been in the area for 2 years and didn't know a single Russian speaker. She got our name and number from one of my clients when she told her that I had a Russian speaking wife. That opened the door to the growing community.

If you feel really isolated, try searching for stores carrying Russian goods and start from there. In Sacramento there is even a small Russian yellow pages that all the stores carry. Of course, Sacramento has about 120,000 Russian speakers.

It is kind of like a secret in your town, until you know the key to open the door. I'm sure you will find some people before too long.

I had no idea there were so many Russians and Russian speakers in our corner of Florida until my wife arrived. We met the first one at the cosmetic counter at Macys. Then we discovered the local Russian deli. Once you meet a few people then you get introduced to others. Now we are a part of the "group" of Russian speakers. It has been good for my wife and I. We have picked up a lot of patients through this group, and are invited to all of the parties, and I must say they know how to party! My wife talks to some of these women daily. Also a great group to know because of their talents. We have used some of them for various jobs from tile work to computer help to A/C repair.

Get out there and listen for that accent.... that's how it started for us.

Elite Deli Fruits & Veggies. I'm the dumb American who comes into the store with hand-written notes from Katya and pointing to her pretty Russian script, then pointing to the product in my other hand and asking if they are the same product.

They are friendly enough folk to the Russian speaking patrons, though I feel a bit intimidated since I can't speak much conversational Russian. I know how Katya must feel all the time now that she's over here.

I'm going to have the opposite problem here. Philly is so saturated with Russian-speaking population that you literally cannot go ANYWHERE without running into some. And those encounters are not always a thing to look forward to.

I'm Russian myself. I've lived here for 10 years, but I still have very limited Russian social circle.

Basically my point is - there's more Russian speaking people in your area than you imagine. No matter where you live. You'll find people, don't worry.

Just a word of caution. Some of the people Vika met at the Russian store turned out to be not so nice. Usually K visa folks that are happily married will know others, and will sometimes make social occasions a way to introduce each other around.

Yes! One of the things we discovered about the already-established Russian community in our area is that they tend to be kinda snobbish. We have met one really cool lady that as luck would have it lives about a 30 second walk from us, but otherwise we've since stopped trying to reach out.

Oh god, ditto that sh!t. I've been here almost 10 years now and it's ridiculous, so hard to find any friends within the Russian community here. Snobbish is a very, very mild word to describe them. Gotta catch them "fresh off the boat", then it's possible :)
