You can buy a house there for a buck, but have to add another thousand for closing cost.

Oh Boy...Detroit...I lived in the suburbs of Detroit for 10 years...1998-2008. During that time, I literally watched in crumble. It was heartbreaking. Finally, there was just no way I could live there any longer so I had to quit my company where I'd worked for 2 decades and look for other opportunities. Lucky for me, in this economy, I was able to find an equivalently good job.

In a nutshell though, the thing that really struck me about Detroit and the entire surrounding area, was the strength of the unions. And, I also believe that this led to the implosion of the city...in my opinion....

Plus, a huge string of corruption at all levels of the govt.

(F) R.I.P. Detroit

Im in the suburbs. Even here it's a mess.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Yep...or even for less than a buck on some properties. I saw some friends of mine pick up property for $0...they just agreed to start paying the property taxes going forward...

When one look s at California and its situation.... it does not require much imagination to see where it is heading as well, not the same disaster but one none the less.

I'm also worried about Baltimore. After darting out of Detroit, I'm now about 45 minutes outside of Baltimore. I accidentally made a wrong turn in Baltimore recently and had a Detroit flashback. I then read that Baltimore is the 'next Detroit' in terms of crime/unemployment etc. I don't think it will crash as hard as Detroit...but it is teeting dangerously.

I find his constant use of the term 'leftist' to be offensive and misleading....

I would agree that the unions were most of the problem.

I think in any form of government, if parts are not working correctly, the entire process breaks down...

When I was a kid I can recall driving through Baltimore on the way to DC to spend CHristmas with the grand Parents, it looked like a hell hole back then to my young eyes with all those high-rise public housing projects, many empty and half boarded up. Urban Renewal cleared away all that. (or at least the ones you could see from the Interstate).

I have an Aunt from Baltimore we might take a trip up to see her and let her give us the tour, she seems quite proud if the city (though she lives in Columbia MD now).

Though I have been through Baltimore countless time, I have never done more than stopped for gas.

It might be offensive but is it misleading?

Many areas of the country are dominated by one political school of thought or another.

Where I live, it's not as bad as Detroit but we have a consistent and growing Democrat majority, the few republicans are out voted every time.

AS demographics have changed, we can expect to have a Democrat Mayor from here on out as well.

And his buddies Ken Wiener and Bill Hart (charged with stealing $2.6 million from a police undercover operations fund) ? Why yes I do remember.
