Where do you rank as a taxpayer? You may not feel rich earning $35,000 a year, but you're in the top half of taxpayers. Make $70,000 and you earn more than 75 percent of fellow taxpayers.

1% of us pay 40% of the taxes? seems like we are telling USC's that it is good to not make money and bad to succeed.... I wonder where VJ'ers fit into the breakdown....

Before the end of this presidential term it will be a lot worse.

How much can someone making less than $35,000 a year really afford to pay in taxes? Considering the cost of living being as it is. For many of these people, the well paying jobs are long gone, and they will probably never get out of low paying service jobs.

The real issue is not that 50% of tax payers are hardly paying anything in taxes, that really only a symptom, but that there is a growing disparity between rich and poor. For which creating more low paying service jobs is not going to fix.

With the amount of taxes we have to pay, and the little money we have left over after taxes, we fall in the bracket where we shouldn't have to pay taxes.

Think we live in a socialistic society that makes me wonder why we work our cans off.

why would we not just have a consumption tax and tax what we spend.. the states already have a mechanism in place to collect it and we would not need the IRS at all.... that way if I choose to save the money I earn for retirement, the govt will get the $ when I spend it based on how much I spend and when

It also demostrates the complete fallacy of "taxing the rich" If you took ALL the money the "rich" made, it would never be enough. It will always be the middle class that pay the most and receive the least until they eliminate our punitive tax systems for the fair tax and let everyone pay a fair share.

Its regressive, poor and lower class spend almost all their income on stuff they need, while the rich only spend a portion of it. As a percentage of income, the poor will be paying much more with such a system.

Whenever such a discussion comes up, the "solutions" always seem to be centred around changing how the tax system works. Instead of discussion how to enable more people to make more money, and thus pay a "fairer" share of taxes. Yes it sucks that a large portion of the population pays so little in taxes. Part of it is the system, the deductions/credits for having kids add up quite quickly, but it doesn't excuse the fact that many of these people can't get jobs that are much better than minimum wage. There used to be a time in this country, that you could get out of high school and work at a factory earning a pretty good living. Now in with our efforts to make more money for CEO's and Shareholders, we shipped all those jobs to places where people will work for much less, all with the promise of what is good for companies/rich is good for everyone else.

ah here we go again with "fair share"

how does one determine fair share for taxes, maybe how many times something is used?

- like if one calls the police 3 times a years and someone else calls only once a year, does the first person pay 3 times more for police than the second?

if things were really fair, we'd all pay the same flat rate, wouldn't we?

the only thing i hate about gov't from-to tax charts or schedules (whatever) is the: if i make 9999.00 i pay 0.00 taxes, if i make 10000.00 i pay 2000.00.

that is such a ripoff!!!

they really give people the shaft when they are just over.

Why do you hate America and advocate Socialism, Charles? :jest:

If it's a household income chart then we are somewhere in the top 10% supposedly. Somehow I don't feel like I'm in the top 10%, but I spent YEARS - okay, most of my life, in the bottom....

The Biggest problem I have with this system of taxation is.... not long after it's implemented there will be some "emergency" reason to start up an income based tax again... perhaps starting with the rich.

IN the end we will be right back where we started paying an income tax AND a consumption too.
