Hi Everyone,

I have no idea where this post goes...but maybe I could get some help on the vj N-400 forums here...

I had applied for my voter's registration card after I got US Citizenship (while I got my EDL at the DMV, on November 25), but I still haven't received such a card in the mail yet....

It's been 4-5 weeks already...and still nothing... :(

And on the notice that I got when I applied, it says to contact the board of elections if I don't hear from then in 30 days...lol..it's been about that amount of time already...

I even checked the online records and it says "no matches found"...

I checked for both my physical address and mailing address (which are diffrent and are different districts...uggh...did they get confused there and send it to the wrong address?)...and nothing....

Is this a problem? How long does it take on average to receive such? Do I get such nearer to election day instead of now in December/January?

Lol....I have no idea how long it takes here in NYS..and neither does my USC husband (he never registered to vote at all, despite being a USC by birth..lol...)....

Any ideas as to how long it takes on average to receive such a card? (especially here in New York State)....

What should I expect to get, other than just a "voter's card"? How does one of these cards look like anyways? And how exactly do I use such on election day?

Should I contact my local board of elections about this too?

I'm not in much of a hurry to receive this...But I would like to know what happened to my voter's registration, and would like to know if I am able to vote when the time comes. After all, I would like to "excercise my right/responsibility" to do such for future elections, as a US Citizen...

Just as long as I get it by next November, in time for the elections, and in time to be able to vote, then so be it....

Meanwhile, I'm still waiting......

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, etc. is greatly appreciated too. Thanks.

Ant

50 states, 60 different sets of laws. We don't get a card, just have to show our face Wisconsin accepts in lieu of a card. Over the Christmas vacation period, is your city clerk even at work now? Our treasurer has to be there to collect property taxes. But no elections going on right now either. Unless you have some local election, really can wait until next November.

One good reason Feingold really helped us get my wife's oath ceremony, was September with November shortly away, that is when your politicians are really helpful.

Voter registration in most states is handled individually by county, even though the rules are set by the state.

My guess is that the county registrar of voters (or whatever they call that office in your county) probably doesn't put really high priority on processing voter registrations during "off-times". If no election is coming up soon, then they may be a bit slow on processing things, and it doesn't really matter much until an election comes around, anyway.

Note that, depending on your state, you may have to register a certain time period in advance of an election in order to vote. A 30 day advance registration requirement is common, but not everywhere. So, for example, the voter registration office might be pretty busy in Sept/Oct before a big November election.

Since they say to contact them if you haven't heard from them after 30 days, and it's already been longer, then I'd go ahead and contact them. A mixup with physical and mailing address certainly sounds like a possibility.

Hi Ant,

I think too that the processing times vary with each county office.

I mailed my voter's application on Nov. 2nd and received the precinct card on Nov. 27th (it took 25 days).

Another possibility is that due to the Christmas and New Year holidays there was a slowdown.

But don't worry - I'm sure you will receive the card soon.

Happy New Year  (sorry it's a little late; been travelling ...)!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you all, for your quick and helpful replies...

Before I continue, here are my replies to your replies...

Rebecajo-True, it varies from county to county and state to state in the USA. I definitely did think about contacting the county clerk/board of elections if I did run into further problems....

Short answer.

This will vary from county to county in the US. If you have questions, you should contact the County Clerk in your county.

Darnell-I thought about re-applying, I admit. But then I thought...What if the application did go through? And if I re-applied, then it would seem like I applied twice, which is illegal to do. So I decided to wait awhile, and see what happens next....

I say re-apply.

NickD-True, it varies from county to county and state to state in the USA. Interesting too, that in your state of Wisconsin, that they accept a in-person application on election day, and that's it. That's definitely easier than registering for a voter's card beforehand! You're right in saying too, that over the holiday season that nobody really works then (especially the government folks), so I decided to wait a bit, before I inquired further. After the holidays everyone is in a better mood anyways....lol.. And yes I can wait until next November to receive such before the election, so no worries there...I just wanted to "get it over with" and finally "complete" my US Citizenship journey by getting this card asap, that's all. And at the same time, wanted to see if they sent it to the right address too (I was having problems with that before)....We'll see what happens there....

Lol...Politicians should be helpful during all times of the year, and not just at election time! All politicians should be helpful regardless, right?

Glad though, that your senator helped in getting your wife's oath ceremony, especially during close to election time....

Likewise, my congressman helped during my I-751 case too..and yes, when it comes to election time, I will defiintely vote for them....

Lucyrich-True, it varies from county to county and state to state in the USA. I agree, that the board of elections (that's what they call it around here in NYS..lol..) might not put a high priority on voter's registration when it comes to processing things during the non-election season. Perhaps that is the case of what happened here, and that my application got slowed down bacause of that. Nevertheless, it's not too much of a worry for me there. And yes I can wait until next November to receive such before the election, so no worries there...I just wanted to "get it over with" and finally "complete" my US Citizenship journey by getting this card asap, that's all. Good point in saying that I have to register a certain time beforehand, so that they have enough notice to add me on the list. Lol..Is notifying them a year in advance in November 2009 for the November 2010 election long enough notice?

And at the same time, wanted to see if they sent it to the right address too (I was having problems with that before)....We'll see what happens there....

You're right in saying that there could possibly be a mixup with the physical and mailing address here (since they are both different for me), which does complicate things. Lol..I have lost my son's birth certificate and SSN card this way...And hopefully this is not the case with my voter's registration card either....Uggggh....Why does my town confuse things like this..I will never know....lol....Seriously..this is an election issue that has to be brought up....

I definitely did think about contacting the county clerk/board of elections if I did run into further problems....

Sand-Lol..I guess I've been on VJ too long to be worrying about stuff like this, as everyone around VJ worries anyways...just kidding..

But seriously though, even if VJ wasn't involved, I'd still be worrying anyways, as it is in my nature to worry...I can't help it!

And yeah, I do worry about other VJ users too...which is why I try to help all you out as best as I can..so there are less worries for everyone...

Don't worry, be happy...Don't worry when you're on VJ!!!......:) Let's share and help each other through our worries......

Nevertheless, thanks for your reassuring words here......"I will get it!", I think to myself now...Thanks...:)

And likewise, don't worry about your situation too....Good luck with the jury duty thing and good luck with the rest of your journey.

No worries for you or for anyone else here on VJ either! It will all end "happily ever after" for everyone!

Thanks too, for sharing your "voter's registration card" timeline too...

It sure does help too, that I'm in the same boat, for waiting that long too!

That's great that you got your card already. And may you have a good experience using that card to vote in your first election as a US Citizen!

Nevertheless, thanks for your reassuring words here......"I will get it!", I think to myself now...Thanks...:)

Happy New Year to you too! And wishing you here all the best in your travels and voting experiences as a USC too!
