So what's the deal with getting married within 90 days of fiancee arriving in the USA?

Do we need to have a wedding ceremony? We really don't want to have any wedding. I'm in Minnesota.

Does she need to get her social security number before we can apply for this marriage license?

You are required to marry within the 90 days.

What type of ceremony is your choice. Judge, justice of the peace, 2 witnesses, a ceremony with 500+ guests is up to you.

Marriage license requirements vary by state.

You only have to be legally married. Check with the registrar for the county you live in as it may vary from county to county, but at least for some counties, you need a SSN. I can't say if this is true for all - again check with your county registrar.

As for me and my husband, we were both in jeans when we got married in a restaurant somewhere in Beverly Hills through an ordained minister. We just had one witness.

Although I applied for an SSN before the marriage, I received it almost a month after I got married. It wasn't required during the simple marriage ceremony in that restaurant. My husband and I want to hold a much prepared wedding within two years for his parents, sisters, and relatives who are in New York to be present and available and another wedding in the Philippines in a few years.

Hakuna matata.

God bless us all.

Keep in mind too that if your county is a stickler for the SSN, you can go somewhere else and get married too. Lots of people like vegas :) Just make sure the US recognizes your marriage within 90 days of entering. They don't care how that is done as long as it is legal.

MN does not require an SSN for an alien... Just go to your county courthouse and apply..

# Effective August 1, 2009, both parties have to be present in order to apply for a marriage license. If one party cannot be present, they must sign a notarized statement attached to a copy of the completed application stating that the facts are true

# You must have a license purchased before getting married. A license purchased in Minnesota is only valid in Minnesota and can not be used in any other state. A marriage license must be used within six months or it expires.

# No blood test or physical is required.

# To obtain a marriage license (without parental consent) you must be 18 years of age. Be prepared to present valid identification.

# One of the applicants must be a man and the other a woman.

# For each person, you must know the full legal name, address, date and place of birth, telephone numbers and social security numbers (if you have one).

# You must know the names after marriage and an after-marriage address.

# If you have been previously married and are divorced, you must bring your divorce decree with you. If you are widowed, please provide the date of death.

Moving to "Moving here and new life in America" forum as this is NOT a K-1 visa discussion topic but one that relates to after arriving in the USA

Please cite your source. A recent check of, for example, Washington county's registrar page said nothing of the sort.

I notice that you just edited your post to include a quote, but there is no way for us to know where that came from. Still, at least one county requires a SSN for both according to my link.

How about personal experience as a source (In Washington County BTW)?

How about Ramsey County?

Unless your personal experience was recent, I'm not sure that counts. It is possible that something has changed since then. In fact, the Washington county page says something to that effect. The OP should check his county's website and possibly call before marching down there to apply for a marriage license.

Take a look at the MN Marriage license application form. There is a box that you check to certify you DO NOT have a SSN. The only thing that has changed on the application procedure recently is the requirement for BOTH to appear.

BTW, if you d/l the marriage application form from Washington county's website... it has the same "certification" section.... (Revision 8/1/2009)

Yep, I just looked at that. Unless the form on their website is outdated, they should probably note that SSNs must only be listed if they exist for the applicants on the website as well.

EDIT: Doesn't look like they are out of date.

A wedding at the county clerk's office takes about 60 seconds and minimal cost.

That's the best wedding in the eyes of the immigration authorities, there is no

question that the judge there is qualified.

Just do it.

The best wedding is done by a registered officiant that the county then "certifies" as being legal. The USCIS has no idea whether the "officiant" is qualified or not, nor do they know if the officiant is registered or not, nor do they know if the officiat is necessarily a judge or not. The certification function is performed by the county.

FWIW, I was married by a registered officiant who happened also to be a person that worked in my office.... not a judge, just a lowly secretary.... but was REGISTERED in MN to perform marriages....
