I'm curious about New Year's plans, given the economic situation and for VJ'rs spending so much on immigration expenses. We personally have no money to spend on NY celebrations this year thanks to immigration and extended time without a work permit, so we're watching the ball drop on TV and maybe having a friend or two over for BYOB and games.

Discuss :)

I don't know yet.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Nothing special here. We'll stay awake until midnight - maybe watch on tv for the various celebrations, and then kiss at midnight to welcome in the New Year. Last year we welcomed in the New Year online in a chatroom together with some friends from across the country :) . It was interesting as we got to welcome in the New Year several times as it passed the various time zones. We may do that again as well.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

On New Year's eve, I'd probably be working my a$$ off in the gym like what I did on Christmas eve.

After that, hubby and I will probably end up staying home or eating out in our fave restaurant.

New Year's Eve is absolutely amateur night, si man, and I strongly prefer to stay in and avoid the drunken idiots. However, the wife is lobbying me to go to dinner with another couple. I will not drink one DROP of booze (because of all of the lurking puercos), and I will insist that we head for home no later than 12:05 a.m., si man.

In the late '70s, when I was around 18 years old (legal drinking-age in Iowa at that time), my best pal & I spent a snowy New Year's Eve secretly partaking of a bottle of Old Overcoat (or some such 800-proof Kentucky bourbon) downstairs in my parents' house. We couldn't drink very much, because it blew our eyeballs out. I saved the bottle and took it with me wherever I moved during subsequent years. Whenever I was alone on subsequent December 31sts, I'd take a belt when the ball dropped in Times Square. An hour later, if I was in the Central time zone, I'd have another snootful at midnight (it took that long until my head cleared, si man), then screw the cap back on and put the bottle away.

The stuff lasted me until 2004 or 2005, si man (hic). I reported "the end" to my pal, and he was favorably impressed with my memory of the original snootfuls and the continuation of the tradition, si man.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
