After my wife and I got married we went to the local social security office to change her name. The lady behind the counter said the computers were down and she made copies of all the information and submit it later that day (around Dec.1st). The following day we received confirmation that she did this but today we received a letter from the social security office stating the following -

We cannot give you a Social Security card at this time because:

The Department of Homeland Security is unable to verify the immigration document you submitted as evidence of your lawful alien status. you should contact that agency to clarify your current immigration status.

You will need to contact the USCIS office in Milwaukee to update your name. There address is 310 Eask Knapp St. Milwaukee WI 53202. You must have an appointment with them to update your information.

Please contact us when:

You can give us the document(s) we need.

They did not offer us a telephone number to make an appointment at this office. This office we very difficult the first time we tried to get my wife a social security card.

Please any help will be appriciated.

Thanks,

Chad

Does that mean she has already received her SSN before and your intention was only to change the name on her SS card? Or you are trying to say that you are still applying for her SSN... which is it exactly between the two?

We were only trying to change the name on the social security card. I explained to the lady at the counter that even with the new social security card my wife would not be able to work until after her adjustment of status was approved and that we only wanted to put her new last name on the card as we are filing all of the adjustment of status paperwork in her new name. This can be very frustrating as they did not state what they were missing so I will call them on Monday to see what they need...

My husband and I went to an SS office on Tuesday to have my name on the card changed. The woman who entertained me said that I have just been assigned with an SSN and they could only change the name on the card at least 30 days after I received the original card.

Apparently, your case is different from mine.

I hope things work out better for us all in God's aid.

1. Go back to SS

2. Apply for the card again in your wifes MAIDEN name

3. Use her passport and K-1 as identifcation

4. Do not leave until you have confirmation you will receive your SSN the next day (the card will take a week or so, but you can get the number the next day)

5.Get a supervidor if needed

6. Change her name AFTER you have a green card
