Hi guys, I've just got two questions.

Firstly, do I have to add proof of my husband's and my relationship into our I-485 package that we send off to Chicago, or do I bring that to the interview? What's our best bet there?

Secondly, what is the benifit of getting my husband a social security number? Is it something that's dire and we need to get it for him, or can we get away with not having it? What are your experiences? Thanks gang:)

Well, for one thing, he won't be able to work without an SSN. All employers are required to have that number on file for each employee.

The only "proof" you need to include with the I-485 is the marriage certificate. The rest will come when (and if) you have an interview.

I say get the SSN before he unpacks his suitcase. No, you do not need it for AOS. No, it is not a dire need. But it is necessary for many ther things which are needed in life, bank accounts, insurance, etc. If you do not get the SSN within the first 76 days he is here, you need to wait until he has an EAD or Green Card. My wife got hers 16 hours after she arrived.

Not being a smart azz, but think of all the things that you, a USC, need a SSN for. Your husband would need it for the same. (tax filing, employment, bank account, etc.)

My thoughts on getting the SSN for tax purposes too. It is a lot easier to claim your spouse on 2009 taxes with a SSN than trying to get an ITIN number. Besides the hassle and delay in getting the return, if the government decides to return another stimulus payment your spouse will not qualify with a ITIN.
