My husband used TrueCare Advantage Discount Card until we got married & I added him to my health care plans. It worked well for his dentist visit.

Can anyone recommend a good temporary health insurance plan to cover me until I am married in the states? I am moving to Oregon. Cheers!

We used Blue Cross Blue Shield's short term insurance, whcih you can get for anything from 30 to 180 days. It pays fully for primary care and has only a small deductible for ER, diagnostics etc. Worked out good for us, as they paid for all of the twin's catch-up vaccinations and well-child visits.

the trick with some short-term health insurance providers is that some WON'T insure non-US citizens unless they have been in US for over 90 days. I want to look into the BlueCross Blue SHield idea given here 'cause that is such a recognizable insurance name. I hope to hear more about it.

*nods* we encountered that problem too, and really wanted health insurance right away because with two active toddlers, you just never know when there may be a broken bone or a high fever or whatever. And even a visit to a family doctor with labs can easily cost 500 dollars (our first well child visit did, per twin!Fortunately the insurance paid in full). I believe with Blue Cross, the rules can be slightly different per state, but here in Arkansas, they accept any legal resident/ visa holder, and your insurance starts from the postmark on your insurance form and cheques. So we sent off the forms the day after we arrived (arrive late at night), and included a photocopy of the visa page on my passport which was stamped at PoE, and were accepted no problem. As I said, we have received very good service from them, the only three problems I see are:

- no pre-existing conditions covered but that is the same with most health insurance ehre, unless your employer provides it).

- No pregnancy related expenses covered.

- You can renew the insurance as often as you want (say, if you buy 45 days and then end up not being able to get on the husband's health insurance yet/ have not found a job yet), but any conditions discovered in one insurance period will be pre-existing conditions and thus not covered for the next, and you cannot get a refund- so if you pay for 180- days but end up needing only 40 because you have a job after with health insurance, no money back.

BTW, what was important to us with BCBS is that they are so big, and thus everyone accepts them- you can choose whatever hospital, doctor, therapist etc you want. Many of the health insurance companies that advertise on TV here have very restricted lists of doctors you can attend, especially if you need a specialist. Insurance for two adults (35 year old female, 33 year old male) and twins age 8 months was 5.10 dollarsa day, which is quite reasonable I thought.
