Thailand or Siam? What’s in a Name?

Yea... Bangkok is the name of a small region in Krungtep. Krungtep means a city of Angle. When King.. (his name escape me, he's the one before King Rama I) moved the capital of Siam to the place it is now, the place is called Bangkok.. then Bangkok expand and the new city is called Krungtep. This is not so accurate coz I draw it from my memory - which I dont have much of these days But that's the idea

Amoung Thais, we call the place Krungtep and Bangkok is a district in Kruntep but if the name Bangkok came out of farang, it's understand that Bangkok = Kruntep (and not just the district name) confuse yet?

When the capitol was moved from Ayutthaya we know it was first located on the west bank of the Chao Paraya in Thonburi.

Most farang think of Thonburi as part of Bangkok but now I understand that it's really part of Krungtep.

You are right, I forgot about Thonburi My understanding is that the capital moved again from Thonburi to another part of Krungtep..(as Thonburi is the other side of Chao Praya river) Oh well, my memory is very rusty about this.. it gets me interested though.. after I get home I'll have to look up on my other computer (with Thai) so I can read up about it in Thai

Lol That's funny coz I went to Christian school for the total of 10 years out of 16 - kinda learn about Mary and Joseph, christmas story and all the glorious songs (which I can still remember) before Buddha! But I'm true and true Buddhist

Same with my wife, Buddhist but attended Christian schools. It really makes for an interesting mix and even though she has had a large Christian influence in her life she is Buddhist through and through.

I took her to church Sunday with my 83-yr old mom and she fit right in (her son went to a Jesuit High School in BKK).

All the people there were happy to finally meet her.
