I signed up for Vonage and so far I really like it. And best of all, we call Russia landlines for free. I was spending a small fortune before, so at $24.95 for all my non mobile phone needs, I am pleased. The cost to call a mobile phone on Vonage is 8¢ a minute. I can live with that as my wife mostly calls landlines. And I was able to keep my old phone number as well.

The call quality has been quite good also.

I had vonage a few years ago and I liked the service. I only canceled it because I decided to use only my mobile and the vonage rates to Ethiopia were way more expensive than calling cards.

Now international calls would be free unless you call a mobile phone in Ethiopia.

My calls to Russia using Vonage were free until about 4 months ago, now I have to pay around 6 cents a minute. My Vonage bill now hits $ 45.00-55.00 a month which is not bad. The service seems fine.

Still, I think I am going to change to a Verizon land line and with the unlimited international calls for I belive $ 15.00 a month (could be 20) I can still save a few bucks.

I think old Vonage users may have a different deal but not sure. I have not been charged anything for my Russia calls thus far.

As for a Verizon land line...I'm pretty sure you'll pay more than $15 a month for all services. I think just local service would be more than that. I was paying over $40 just for local service. Or is there a deal i don't know about?

Vonage only has unlimited calls to 60 countries and unfortunately Ethiopia isn't on that list. On top of that our friends and family only have cell phones anyway. Thanks for info anyway.

My wife and I sent a Majic Jack to my wife's parents in Ufa Russia. When you have a Majic Jack you can call anywhere to the Usa and Canada for free. (Also Majic Jack to Majic Jack is free) The Majic Jack uses the exact same technology and is only twenty dollars a YEAR! So we can call us everyday for free or we can call them everyday for free. I do not know why they say twenty dollars a year we have had ours for over a year and never recieved another twenty dollar bill. Shhh do not tell them. Anyway it is great quality and we use to use phone cards so we have saved alot of money. We bought ares at walmart because they have a 90 day return policy and I was skeptical at first. Ah I sound like a salesperson for them haha. I have not been on for awhile. How is everyone?

P.S. was this forum always Russia, Ukraine, Belarus?

Welcome back, Corey!

We became the RUB forum (we're now known as the RUBbers!) a few months ago after an influx of folks from Ukraine and Belarus hanging out here with us. Good times, great people so we've joined forces now. I think the real reason they're here is because MENA was lonely and needed an alter-ego of similar proportions.

I'm going to have to try that Majic Jack. I didn't know they could use it on their end. Thanks for the tip.

Also... what's been going on? How are things?

Very nice to know about the Magic Jack. Gonna buy two and send Daria one. See how it works out.

Wonder if there is a way to document those phone calls....(I'm being paranoid because we have no records of phone calls to each other, we don't use Skype heh)

We didn't have any either. Don't worry about it.

Thanks, Slim. I'm going to stop worrying about it then. Our case is iron-clad as far as I see it, just a matter of waiting until VSC gets to the petition.

On a matter of phones though, I still like google talk/gmail chat over anything, since I can use it on my cell phone to call wherever I am.

Whatever you do make sure you find out what you are spending in advance.

About 3 years ago in my pre Vonnage days I had a gal visit me from Russia for a week. I was using MCI in those days and when I called to the FSU, which wasn't often I had something akin to a card I used. She couldn't get the card to work for some reason and I told her to just call through on the regular line but not to talk forever.

When I got my MCI bill she had made 4 calls totaling one hour and five minutes and my bill for those calls was $ 715.00

I just came back from 8 days in Aruba with my wife a few days ago. I took my blackberry and we took our laptop. Since the hotel charged for internet and the time there would have cost us $ 55.00 for internet access we decided to just use the Blackberry since I have an unlimited data package. Two days before the end of our trip the internet stopped working. It was on the news that RIM was having some tech difficulties so I didn't think too much of it. Yesterday I called my wireless provider (ATT&T) They said they had shut my service of because of the charges I was incurring. My data program only covers the US and intenational data is $ 20.00 a kilobite.

Did you guys read online reviews for Magic Jack? I'd definitely recommend reading them before buying. Its $20 for 1yr, and $20 for the usb magic jack plug.

The call quality is horrible. There is about a 3 second delay (more if calling a cell phone). You arent sure if the call was dropped or if you are waiting for the person to speak or if their voice just hasnt come through yet. I found myself talking over the other person. Not worth the mess when there are other better quality options.

We tried one of those long distance companies, where you dial an access number and then your destination. It was working well for a while, until we got a bill from AT&T for $300 for 40 minutes. Yes $300! I called AT&T to find out why they'd be billing me, as they are not my long distance carrier. They said that the company I had, had their lines busy, so the call was routed over their network, and hence the "non-customer" rates. I fought them on the charge for about a year, taking the issue to the BBB to get it resolved. Ugh what a mess.
