I'm glad you made that decision. If push comes to shove, and your employer puts "fired" on your ROE, you can write a letter explaining what happened to EI. You'll have proof that the interview was that day. I know my ROE didn't say it was because I was moving to the U.S., just "quit", and I still got EI. If you get back and they say they told you, you couldn't have that day off, just tell them you quit if you think you're going to get fired, and they'll put quit on your ROE.

Yeah, I don't know about Alberta, but in B.C. the ROE doesn't actually say "fired" or "laid off" I can't recall exactly what the terminology is for when you quit, but for getting laid off it shows "employment terminated by employer" or something like that. I remember thinking, "What the heck?" when I saw that, since the word "terminated" makes it sound like I was fired...when I was very clearly laid off. But there was no listing for "laid off", and I can't recall any listing for "fired" either.

Ultimately, if they DO "fire" you, they may have the good sense / good grace to consider it a termination of employment...or perhaps it is like that by default anyhow. Trailmix can probably come along and clear up the grey areas in this post.

But even "Dismissal" on Mal's form would cover both layoff AND firing, wouldn't it? In other words, for EI purposes how can they determine the difference between firing and layoff from the ROE?

I was laid off due to company restructuring -- they basically got rid of my position since they went in a completely different direction.

I'm still bitter about the situation, but I won't get into it.
