hmmm...scary stuff.......

I'd be all about steaks right now.

Bad idea. Europe also is an epicenter of mad cow disease... Pork seems safe, at least for the moment. :P

Yeah I thought about that once I said it, but mad cow hasn't been mentioned as much and so I figured eh, maybe they have beat that one. Maybe the testing is good now and it's highly unlikely that you can still get it. Then again, maybe it's not and I'm just not up to date on current mad cow events. Mooo.

You're right about Mad Cow. They're testing every animal that gets slaughtered. But it's the same with bird flu. So far, no chickens have been infected and since Mad Cow taught some people a lesson in meat safety, most likely no infected chicken would get into the food chain. And even if, unlike Prions, viruses can be killed through cooking. :D

Ack! Chicken is the staple meat of my diet... I don't know what I'd do if it wasn't safe to eat it!

I find the idea of the bird flu very scary... but like SARS I'm telling myself that it's overrated and overhyped and it's not nearly such a deadly enemy as they're making out. And I'm praying for it not to mutate...

Mad cow disease is a non-issue. 157 people worldwide have died from it total. Much bigger problems. I bet more people have died from shark attacks than mad cow over the last 15 years (close at least).

From what we know at least. There are still some places in the world where they don't test for Mad Cow even though there are indications that infections exist. It also takes a while to get CJD (human variant of Mad Cow), which could lead to more infections in the future.

I agree, though, that food-borne diseases shouldn't be overblown in proportion. But on the other hand, some are avoidable by changing farming and slaughtering practices, and none should get into the food chain.

We should focus more on obiesity and heart disease. Much bigger killers.

Yep, keeping those hormones out of animal feed would help with both...Having animals roam the pastures instead of standing in one place for their entire lives would help too (more muscles, less fat). It's all connected.

From an article I saw, the bird migration routes into the USA come down from Alaska across Canada, having first got there through Asia (I don't hink they come over the top!). Based on that the possibilities are late-spring onwards.

Well then I propose that George W. Bush invade Canada to prevent the "terrorist swans" from attacking the United States.

 and the overuse of antibiotics in animal feed....

Goat meat is sooo good. You guys make me hungry.

On the news front, they just found a dead swan and a dead hawk in Germany; both died of bird flu. Now the TV won't shut up about it. Oh well, at least I've been convinced 10 times in the last 3 minutes that there is no immediate danger to humans... God, I hate propaganda!

God, I hate propaganda!

How is it propoganda? There is no immediate danger, as in no one watching TV is going to fall down dead at this particular moment in time :)

10 times in three minutes means they are hammering it into your head which makes it more difficult to believe and sound more like propaganda.
