Husband Sent Passport Through Laundry

Hey guys. We're just getting ready to start our AOS process. My husband entered the US at the end of October, we were married a few days after and need to file our AOS by Jan 20.

As I was emptying the dryer last week, I saw something blue and all curled up. Sure enough, it was his passport! While most of it remained intact, all of his entry stamps are gone, and his I-94 is just barely legible. His K-1 visa sticker is still in pretty good shape. I know I need to send a copy of his I-94, but I'm not sure how it's going to look. Also, are they stamped at all? As it is now, it looks like there may have been some kind of ink on it, but there's no visible stamp.

Have any of you heard of someone in this predicament? What do you think our best course of action would be?

Wow, that sucks...

Try making an infopass appointment and see if you can get a copy of the part he filled out at the border?

I'm not sure what to do, since they'd probably not like the fact that it accidentally got run through the laundry... you need a copy of his bio page in his passport too... he might have to get a new one if it's not in good enough shape.

I'd try an infopass appointment and bring the passport along and see what you can do about it.

I hope you can get that fixed.

I've never heard of that problem before and I'm not really sure what to do, but as Rhiann said, you should get in touch with USCIS? I would guess? and let them know about your situation. I would also imagine that you would need to replace the passport because he is going to need a valid passport. I know the US embassies in foreign countries handle lost/damaged/stolen passport issues all the time, so I would guess the Canadian embassies in the US could do that too. Then you would just have to notify USCIS that the passport was damaged and had to be replaced. I hope it can be resolved easily!

April 19, 2010 - NOA1 (documents received at Mexico City Embassy)

April 20, 2010 - NOA2 (received notice April 28, 2010, mailed April 27)

May 9, 2010 - I emailed them using the inquiry form asking for my case number

May 17, 2010 - received case number and link to Packet 3 by email

May 18, 2010 - sent Packet 3 to Ciudad Juarez

May 28, 2010 - called Ciudad Juarez to see if we had an appointment yet, they said wait 6-8 weeks :(

May 30, 2010 - I return to the US

June 8, 2010 - called and found out appointment date

June 16, 2010 - received Packet 4

July 6, 2010 - interview - Approved!

July 7, 2010 - pick up visa at DHL and POE to activate

July 29, 2010 - welcome letter received

Well, I made an infopass appointment for tomorrow to see what they think is the best way to handle it. I called USCIS, the fee for a new I-94 is $320... after Christmas and saving for our AOS fees, that's a lot. Blech. You can imagine how I felt when I pulled his destroyed passport from the dryer!

Wow, they really like to rob us don't they?

320 dollars for half a piece of paper.

I guess they're making us pay for trees
