My cable company doesn't have any Russian channels. I was wondering if others have any suggestions for watching Russian T.V. in the USA. Can Russian channels be watched through the internet? If yes, what is the website and any suggestions on an easy way to get internet T.V. from the computer screen to the T.V. screen? Also, if there is a way to watch streaming Russian movies, I would be interested in that. No need to mention Netflix, as I know they have a few Russian language movies available there.

Well, as I had a thread about this a bit ago I will give you what I did for my sweetie.

Here are the two websites I suggest. The first is:

http://nashdomtv.com/

http://larutv.com/

I used LARUTV. The reason is the website was at least a bit in English. hehe. Anyway, they both pretty much do the same thing. It is a IP TV. Meaning Television over the internet using IP tunneling technology. You have your user name and password you program into the set top box, connect a broadband internet connection to the box and tada, you are rocking and rolling. I thought that LARU had a better selection of channels. I got the Russian + Video package, so it has movies and the regular tv channels that you get in Russia. Further the box is able to "time shift" the shows, so if she usually watched show X at 3PM, then you can make it so show X is on at 3PM your time locally. :) Very handy. The movies and all of it is of course streaming via the internet, so if you plan to do anything else on the computer at the time she is watching TV better be sure you have a very good connection. I have Time Warner Cable and it is running at around 15M down. So it is just fine for me. I can download something and/or use the playstation for a online game and then she can watch her shows at the same time.

Best to just check out the site, pick a package and then order the package you like. They ship you the box and then you get a bill each month from them to your email. Go into google checkout to pay it. Very easy to do. I love it. Of course your user id and password will let you watch the shows via the internet on the computer also, but the best bet is the package deal with the set top box (ip tv box) as it lets you connect it to a TV.

Let me know if you have questions as I am using it right now. :)

Thanks, Jeff. Very helpful and I also found the previous thread. I will check out these websites and write you offline with any questions I may have.

Direct TV offers some Russian Channels as does Dish Network. I used to install Dish. You would have to subscribe to their basic programing and have a 2nd dish installed to get the channels for an additional fee.

Yes, when Zhanna first got here, my friends place that we stayed at had no cable but he had internet hooked up to his Xbox 360 and could get movies from netflix via Xbox. The only movie we could find (in Russian w/ English subtitles)at the time was "Little Vera". It's a horrible movie from the 80's. Do yourself a favor and never watch it.

I absolutely refuse to have Russian TV in my house. If she's in America, she can watch American TV in English.

Not to be a complete hardass on the subject, but the more you "smoothly transition" her life, the longer it'll take for her to get acclimated.

Ditto. No Russian TV at our house. Wife did not want it anyway. She knew she would improve her English much quicker listening to American TV. She actually prefers to read so we are buying good books in Russian, and she is reading the Russian news on the internet. I'm probably the one that should be watching Russian TV to improve my Russian.

Thank God I have a Russian husband! We don't have a Russian TV per se, but we do enjoy pre-recorded comedy and modern detectives movies, especially about Russian milicia (police).

I'm Russian too, but I hate Russian TV with passion. She's not here yet, but we've discussed the whole Russian TV dilemma. We agreed that we will download whatever shows/movies we want to watch, at first, and once her English gets good we can have Russian TV in our house. However, I am pretty sure by that time she won't even want it :)

We don't have any Russian TV yet, but I'm interested in it. My wife has already transitioned well...for her it's more about sharing cultures and what not. She has even gone so far as to take some Russian DVDs she brought with her and add subtitles to them by hand (a really time-consuming process) so we could watch them with her. She just really lights up when she can share her movies with us. Overall they have been pretty interesting and enjoyable, but I don't think I'm biased in saying tht their special effects aren't very special! hahaha Most of the time I'm trying to get her caught up on American movies but maybe once a month we'll watch one of hers. We also have some nights where we just alternate picking videos off YouTube. It's pretty hilarious the contrast between selections since I'm all into heavy metal and instrumental guitar god stuff.

On an unrelated note, she just finished her first full semester in college and got 5 A+'s. I like to think I'm just a great tutor! ;)

What I meant was that I don't want to be put in a position by my husband who gives me a grief about watching Russian stuff :bonk: Maybe it's couterproductive for those women who just came in to the States and trying to learn English, but I think at this point my English is OK and I should be allowed to watch Russian movies

Going back to the original topic, don't sign up for local "Russian" channels from NY. They are awful and have nothing to do with being Russian.

No, I get you. I like watching Russian movies and shows still, and I've been here for 10 years.

Also, for downloads, I suggest http://torrents.ru/
