Hi everybody,

Happy holidays!!

Just wanted to share: my russian passport (zagran) expires in June.

After reading all the stories here on VJ about exchanging passports, I got an appointment at the Russian consulate here in NYC in the end of October.

To be honest, I didn't expect any news till February (with all the holidays and our 10 days New Year's celebration).

Of course, when you try to get any information about delays from the embassy/consulate, they give you a standard reply - 3-4 months.

Imagine my surprise when yesterday I received an email from the embassy saying that my passport is ready to be picked up!!!!

May be they are trying to finalize their stuff before the end of the year, I don't know;

But i'm so happy !!!!

So you had to physically go to the office? Also, how much was the fee?

Yes, I had to go there.

The good thing is that, at least for the consulate in NYC, you can get an appointment online.

The fee is $111 (money order only). If you want to add the "also known as..." stamp, it's extra $35

My next question! Thanks!

isn't it $70 if you want to get it the same day? I mean, it may not matter since you are in NY, but I can't wait 5 days :blush: Edited by Oksana81

My wife just went through the passport renewal process. She was required to go to the embassy in person to apply, and also told she must return in person to pickup the passport (approx 1 month later). We live in WI and the embassy that handles WI is in Seattle. Having a 1 year old, she tried speaking with officials to be allowed to do this by mail, but got nowhere. They wouldn't take our pre-paid FED EX when we were there in September either. Good news is that the passport was done in October, and in late November they called and said that a consular will be Milwaukee in January and she can pick it up from him/her.
