Public sector jobs compete for talent in the same labor pool as the private sector.

If you are a talented manager, administrator, IT professional, accountant, geologist, health-services worker etc. and you can make X dollars in the private sector, why would you consider taking a public sector job unless it payed an competitive salary or otherwise offered you a compensation package or opportunities to that private sector opportunity?

Why would we, as taxpayers, deny ourselves the ability to the best possible talent on our public payroll? Do we really want to hire less qualified and less competent employees on our behalf just to keep the payroll down?

Thank you for bringing the balance of perspective into the discussion, ScanMan.

I was deeply disturbed that this would simply devolve into a generalized Hater Thread on Gummint Workers. :protest::ranting:

Silly, thats exactly why I gave you that good advice.

If the Gov/t were handing out money for simply being attractive and having a good sense of humor.... I would be the first one with my hand out.

The days of feeling guilty for taking gov't money is like 25 years past.

If you don't take it.... they will find another toilet to flush it down.

You are too much, I give you good advice on how to solve the problems you spoke of, you bring it up in this topic and make me out to be the bad guy......

Ok Ok I'll be the bad guy if it elevates you in some way.

By the way, how is that job search w/ insurance coming along?

Danno -

There's a rather large agency of the US government right in my hometown - the Bureau of Public Debt.

I am not kidding you when I tell you that I have been applying for jobs there off and on for the last 30 years, and actively for the last 10. When they were using the CASP score for hiring, I tested with a 94 out of 100.

But I don't have any military service, and no matter how high I score on a test or how lengthy my essays on job resumes on usajobs.gov, I can't even get an interview. Nobody I know who works at the Bureau can tell you of anyone working there without military service.

I kind of resent the implication from you that women such as myself have somehow not tried hard enough (or whatever your problem is) to better our lots. I graduated from high school two years after the end of the draft. It wasn't 'the thing' back then to enlist in the military, especially for women. Myself, I went to college. My mistake was taking a two year degree rather than getting my bachelors.

At any rate, I've always had jobs where I could hold my head up even if I didn't earn what I am worth. And yes at this stage of my life I'm worth quite a lot more than I make. You can ask any of the four people in my division who I serve. But that doesn't mean I have not done everything I could given where I live to have earned more money or obtained better benefits. There simply aren't a lot of choices.

Not everybody who earns less than $75K a year is a schmuck sitting around waiting for a handout. And I'm really sick of your jargon that implies all "working class" folks have that mindset.

Considering the results, we must want to hire less qualified and less competent employees to work for our government. Our president and federal legislators attest to that.

Getting a Fed Job is not ez. Why is it you guys think any slob or dumbsh!t can get one. The hiring process is stringent and arduous. So those hired and who get decent salaries are to be commended and not condemned. Peace.

Because, they do. Water finds its level, and apparently, government personnel departments do too.

I regret that sometimes communication on the web can sometimes be quite misleading.

I have no idea what your level of "effort" might be in your job search so why would I imply anything?

also, this is the second time you have suggested I look down on "working class" folks, the only ones I look down on are... the ones who aren't interested in working (little humor there).

At any rate, I certainly consider myself "working class" type person and always will be.

I absolutely believe your situation about "others" always getting the Gov. job, when I worked for the Fed years ago, it was through "someone" I knew.

Even so I encourage you to keep trying at both the fed, state and local level. If you have some college and a little BS, you might land something, there are a lot of vacancies listed it's just finding something in your area.

Really, I wish you the best!

Personally, I think the govt. following private industry and outsourcing to China is a great, cost-cutting idea! The Chinese have done such a wonderful job with their own country. Surely, they can only improve America too.

No, actually the term is not clear,

Would that person you are talking about be a father of four.... or a teenager looking for gas and burger money by working after school?

The concept of a living wage is actually very clear. If you care to understand it, that is.

As to your "point": Way too many of the people that work jobs that don't pay a living wage don't look like any teenagers I've ever seen.
