Well, I hope they find it and replace it. I've not been to Auschwitz and there were certainly thousands of other camps, but it is the most famous and it should stand as a testimony to the evil that has happened and that, unfortunately, still happens, in some parts of the world. It's too easy to forget for some people. 70 years is not a long time.

Polish police find stolen Auschwitz gate sign

Police said early Monday that they have found the infamous "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign that was stolen on Friday from the gate of the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz.

Police spokeswoman Katarzyna Padlo told The Associated Press that the sign was found in northern Poland. She said police also detained five men aged between 25 and 39 who are being transported to Krakow for questioning.

Another spokesman, Dariusz Nowak, said the sign was cut into three pieces, each containing one of the words.

He said the police were planning a news conference in Krakow at 0800 GMT (3 a.m. EST) Monday.

The police refused to divulge any details of the circumstances in which the sign was found or to speculate on the motive of the perpetrators.

Krakow police are in charge of the investigation because they are the regional command for the area including the Auschwitz museum.

If they thought to sell it to those who respect the memory of the Holocaust

or to those that don't respect it - it makes no sense either way.

All that caused by one stolen sign and they don't really know who did it.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out it was taken by some university students on a dare.

But it also would make for a heck of a trophy for some neo-Nazi group to display at their meeting site.

Can't imagine anyone taking it for any other reason, certainly it's not a candidate for resale.

The "irony" is truly ironic (pardon the pun), as their crime will have

heightened and re-awakened awareness of the Holocaust. There may

even be a solemn "re-dedication" (also ironic) of the sign after appropriate

repair & refurbishment.

How ironic that this sign (which was conceived in deception and built on

a lie) has become an unwitting rallying point for those wishing to honor the dead?

Last I heard was that the camps were thought, by Neo-Nazis, to have been faked. Built just after the war by Jews to get sympathy...

But I could be wrong about that...
