We are going through the packet 3 requirements and proceeding to send in the required forms. As we started to do the DS-160 we noticed it seems to be a smooth online system, we got done and got a nice confirmation with digital passport photo and bar code. Seemed straight forward

We did the online DS-156 form online and it seemed like we did exactly the same stuff twice, got another pdf with barcode.

So did we do this same thing twice accidently, or did we do the right thing and it just happens to be very similar

Thanks

You did it right, just make sure you have copys of the DS 160 confirmation page and a full print out of the questions/completed form. They ask for it at the interview.

2 copys of each!

You did it right, no worries. Apparently, the original intent was for the DS 160 to replace the DS 156, but after more than a year that change hasn't come into effect. For some reason they still want you to fill out both despite the questions being almost identical.

Does the Canadian beneficiary actually include the DS-160 question and answer document in the packet three materials that are returned or is it just the DS-160 confirmation page that is returned? The packet 3 letter for K-1 says Form DS-160, one copy available online at blahblahblah. Is the online submission enough for the question and answers or does the Canadian beneficiary send that multi-page printout too?

Your p3 should list specifically what you need. If it's listed do it. Otherwise you could be delayed refused at your interview for not supplying the needed documents.

Our interview is in Vancouver and it didn't say anything about it on our checklist. Also on the Dept of State website it states...

"The U.S. Embassy and Consulates listed below require nonimmigrant visa applicants (excluding K-1/2 fiancee and E-1/2 Treaty Trader visa classes) to use the new Online DS-160."

But I would just follow what your checklist says. If someone knows more of this then please let me know! Thanks!
