Hi, first let me thank all of the wonderful peeps on this site for all the help/suggestions they've provided. We got married, and now we're doing the SSN thing for my wife (Hamilton, CA) using my last name. Anyways, when I got home from work she told they said it would take 4 weeks to verify documents she provided as K-1. They didn't ask anything or provided any info. They took all her docs (passport, birth cert., copy of marriage docs.) copied them then gave them back. In addition they gave her some form letter with a reference number on it. Based on the stuff we found her on VisaJourney, she wasn't going to ask for manual verification. SHe didn't but this sounds like manual verification. Interestingly enough, she me "....and I couldn't even see a computer monitor anywhere in the office!". I was hoping this part would have been smooth because I wanted to add her to my car ins., bank accounts etc. I think I might be able to add her to my health ins. without it but still.

For the record, this is the SSA office on Waples Mill Rd, Fairfax, VA. Anyone else encountered something like this ?

That's about all it could be for an alien. They either tell you will receive your card in 10 to 14 days or they say don't bother us for a month or more. How long has your wife been here?

She's been here since June 25th. We got married July 13th. There apparently was no mention or checking of any "SAVE" (?) system or anything like that.

I waited awhile for my ssn too. Take a look at my timeline because they had to "manually verify" me too. I would suggest going back every week to check if you are in the system yet (and hope that you don't keep getting the same person lol). After a few weeks a girl ended up calling immigration for me and I got my number the next day.

Good luck to you.

We just got ours in the mail today; we went to the fairfax, va and applied on the 24th I think. I have to go back through the form to find out why the SSN card says "Not authorized for work without DHS authorization". I thought K-1s wouldn't have this restrictinos?

As a K-1 she was issued the right type of SSN card. Once she has permanent resident status she can apply to be issued an unrestricted SSN card. The restriction only means she can't use the SSN card as work authorization. It does not otherwise affect the validity of the card or number. Until she has an unrestricted SSN card she will need to provide an EAD card for work authorization for the form I-9 to be hired.

Okie dokie! Thanks for clearing that up for us, MDYoung. My apologies for not going through the forum/search sooner. I guess I keep expecting things to get screwed up somewhere in the big Gov machine.....

It took ages for my husband's social security card to come through- he had the EAD card and the only thing we were waiting on for him to work was the SS card. It was probably one of the most frustrating parts of this whole journey so far, because we had thought it would be quick and easy and it just wasn't for us.

See my timeline for all previous dates!

Naturalization:

6/28/09: Mail N-400 to Texas

7/6/09: NOA1

7/24/09: Biometrics

10/08/09: Interview

11/21/09: Receive oath date

01/22/10: Oath Date

With thanks to all the helpful people who made this journey slightly more bearable.

I got my first SS card in my maiden name. When I went back with my EAD and other documents to get it changed into my married name they said I was not in the SAVE system and it would take 6 weeks to send my documents to the DHS and get verification. After 2 weeks I got a letter from my local SS department saying the card was on it's way.

James never even got his :P We applied probably close to two months ago. No word from the SS office, whenever we call we just get cut off or put on hold and no one answers. His K1 has since expired so thanks to them (we applied in plenty of time) he won't have a SSN and I can't add him to my bank account until he gets his EAD.
