SSN before marriage?

Is it important to get the SSN before trying to get the marriage certificate?

You can live without one, but applying for one is the smart thing to do.

Gary, why do you always post this info about SSN despite the gov website and VJ mods and other long-standing members telling you otherwise?

It doesn't seem fair to impressionable new posters who are merely babes in the process to post such information. Maybe it would be better if you phrased it as your opinion rather than absolute.

In hindsight, I wish my then fiancee would have gotten her SSN right away. It wasn't required to marry, so she didn't get it. You never know what life is going to throw at you. She ended up returning to her country for medical reason before the AOS was completed. Now I have to go through the hassle of getting an ITIN in order to file taxes jointly. My advice is to get the SSN right away.
