Is it important to get the SSN before trying to get the marriage certificate?

NO, but why not?

You need the SSN for a lot of things. A marriage license or AOS is not one of them. get the SSN before she unpacks her bags. Alla got hers 16 hours after arriving. It comes in handy for bank accounts, insurance, and in her case a school grant for her education.

Go to the SS office, apply for the card in the name exactly as in the passoprt. If she will change her name later, then do this AFTER you have a green card. Do not accept NO for an answer. She is entilted to the SS card up until 14 days before her I-94 expires. There is no need to wait. Alla got hers the next day after she arrived. If you get one of the untrained, mouth-breathing, paid-by-the-pound clerks that tells you some excuse that she cannot get the SSN, then get a superviosr and do not leave until it is taken care of.

Wasn't this same question asked earlier this week in another thread?

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

It can take several days for the new information to get updated in their system - here in Austin, the SSA office has a memo posted that says to wait 8 working days. Some folks go shortly after arriving and have no problems.

I guess it depends on your location. Sorry for asking before I found this, according to my county website:

"The Bride's and Groom's social security numbers are required and must be supplied at the time of application. Social Security numbers will not be printed on the marriage license."

You would likely find that, or similar, written for just about every county in the US - what they don't tell you (frankly because it probably doesn't come up often enough) is that the 'requirement' for a SS# can be waived - if you call your county clerk's office (or which ever office issues marriage licenses) they'll likely tell you this is the case.

Good question. The SAVE system updates every night at 12:01 am and records legal entries into the USA. Only some sort of computer glitch would mess that up, but I do not wait around for two weeks because there MIGHT be a computer glitch the day my fiancee arrives. It is overly conservative to recommend waiting two weeks. Get in there the next morning

the SSn requirement was eliminated in 2008 by the Supreme Court when it upheld a lower court ruling. SSNs cannot be required to get a marriage lisence. I am sure many counties have not updated their rules yet.

In fact the REASON that a k-1 can get an SSN (and K-3s, K-2s and K-4s cannot) is because some jurisdictions required an SSN until last year and a K-1 had to have the ability to get one. Now that the requirement has been eliminated, the SS administration may catch up one day and take K-1s off the eligibility list also.

Haha, so should I go in there and insist that neither of us are required to use our SSN?

You could, sure. But the smart thing to do is go to the SS officeandgetyourfiancee her SSN which you will need for other things anyway. If you wish to cut off your nose to spite your face, it is none of my concern.

My wife had her SSN two business days after arriving and her card in hand 6 days after arriving. We got our marriage lisence 8 days after she arrived and she had her SSN to enter on there...AND she was already added to our bank account, had a student grant for her education, and was added to credit cards and utilities. She had been enrolled for our insurance but it didn't take effect until we were married.

But, hey, yeah...why don't you just make her her wait and then go and demand your marriage lisence without an SSN, I am sure you will both be happy about that.

I am just kidding about that, but I am going to attempt to do things in parallel if I can. I'm really thinking about just trying to do everything at the same time, and wanted to know if one thing depends on another thing.
