I just checked the SSC center website and underneath the section where it says documents needed to apply for an ssn they have a list of 4 objects which are; Documents proving "Immigration status"; Work eligibility; Age, and Identity.

Then underneath the title "Immigration status" they say they need the document I-94 (arrival/departure records) issued when arrived in the United States. I don't remember being issued any sort of document....I may have to have hubby look for it in our documents...but to be completely honest I don't remember being given any sort of document...or even having talked about such thing with the immigration ppl at the POE at JFK.

With the CR1 visa, do we really need this document to prove Immigration status in order to apply for a SSN? IF so, how will we get it if we never received it at POE? I thought all that was needed was hubby's passport...with the cr1 visa and picture id, and age and identity. I also thought that the visa and passport would be enough to prove his immigration status???Am I right?

yep when you first enter the first time. the I551 is a form/ stamp inside the passport that you get before you get a green card. The stamp makes your passport kind of like your temporary green card for 1 year.

I-94 is used as a paper record of arrival and departure for tourists , business people, and K-1 visa holders.

You would NOT have gotten one at all, when coming into the USA, because

YOU are a CR-1 visa holder.

When you come into the usa, a stamp is made in the passport, activating the CR-1 visa for use, in USA, and having some expiration date, between 6 months to 1 year .

That stamp acts 'in lieu' or 'instead of ' the green card, until you receive the green card.

A 551 is the green card itself, but can also be a type of stamp in a passport.

With the initial stamp in the passport from POE, can travel in/out of USA, freely, until the expiration date.

One the POE is over, CBP forwards the record of arrival to DHS, who then tells USCIS - he's here, send the greencard .

There is NO AOS to be done with CR-1/IR-1 visa.

HTH !
