A colleague tried to get me onto this and I rejected it.....Having been to Manila (and outlying areas) many times, I cannot eat that. Having said that, I do appreciate most indigenous foods of the Philippines....

Balut is only eaten because of the lack of food in PI. People who find their chickens eggs in later stages of development won't throw them away as an American would. It's all in the way one is raised. When you are younger eating balut sure beats going to bed hungry.

Poeple end up "loving it". It's all mental.

For me I'll wait a month or so and let the chicken hatch and mature and make adobo.

I'm and never have been starving tho and can wait.

Sad but lots in PI can't.

Believe me when I say you'll love eating balut if you are hungry and starving.

its duck's egg not chicken :)

Both chicken and duck. More and more chicken these days.

Balut is a Filipino delicacy. We have balut here in US too and many other Asian countries but different names of balut. It's not what we eat when were starving or hungry. Honestly, I tried to ate balut but I didn't like it.

Yep It's called "boneless whole chicken" here.

First got started in PI when people didn't find the ducks or chickens nest for awhile and the embryo matured. They were HUNGRY and ate the chick anyway.

Now it's a delicacy.

I'm not sure how people can call it a delicacy when I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot poll. Then again...escargo(snail) is kind of a French delicasy. I'm not a big fan of things that are raw or slimey.

Some people are saying balut is like viagra. :secret: I'm not sure about this though..

You can try it dipped in vinegar, garlic, chilli & salt, it tastes better..

Balut is very good, cost around 10 pesos.

I like to sprinkle a dash of salt on each bite. Good Stuff I am craving it right now

Wife had been trying to lure me into eating it but I just can't.

Just the mere thought of it make me sick to my stomach.

She haven't tried it either and I'm glad she didn't! LOL!

I've tried balut. Made by a Filipina here in Arkansas. I think if i wasn't so shocked, I might have enjoyed it. I don't think I'll try again though. I'd like to try durian fruit but I'm chicken. I took a picture of it in a super market in Lipa City, along with some odd flavored pringles flavors like soft shell crab, sea weed, and boiled shrimp. lol

Tex, I gotta disagree with you on this one. As the pundits would say, durian might smell like hell but it sure tastes like heaven! :star:
