Unclear as to whether he wanted to take down outdoor or indoor Christmas decorations, if outdoor in Wisconsin, lucky to take them down in March as with all that ice and snow, the wires are frozen to your house. Could be indoor where the tree was put in between his recliner and the TV set.

Christmas decorations on sale after Christmas? Maybe in the old days, they try to get rid of all that stuff before Christmas, day after Christmas with huge lines to return presents people don't want, the entire Christmas section is gone and all replaced with garden stuff. Recall needing a new winter jacket in January, couldn't find any, just shorts and other summer clothes.

The truly disturbing part of this story is that he was charged with 1st degree murder, which means he planned it. It wasn't just him getting angry and losing it. His wife told him that he couldn't take them down. So he made a plan to get her back. That's disturbing.
