I am a bi-computer user... lol... I have both a PC and a Mac... I am a travel and portrait photographer and my husband is always on the road, so we use the MAC for when either of us are traveling as the uploading and graphics are super for the laptops as is the camera quality (for skype) is MUCH better. But mostly because we are always having to connect via wi-fi in strange cities and hotels and the security we ge from the mac is a great bonus. (Ya never know what viruses you can get from plugging in strange cities... :jest:

But at home I use my PC which is a desktop. I have to for the storage as I have a super modified PC with truckloads of memory and external backup etc... Plus my ginormous screen I use for photo editing...

Between the two I am more familiar with the PC and how it is set up. It took a bit for me to get comfortable with the Mac but I can see how it is loved. It is pretty easy to move around and the dashboard makes it easy to see what is going on and hide stuff. Not having to slow the system down with the massive virus protection is also a plus and makes it pretty fast. Sometimes when using PC centerd programs (such as Photoshop or Quickbooks) the interface is a bit challanging to figure out as it opens up differently....

For at home users or graphics users the MAC is super... For video and basic photo sharing the ease of use cannot be beat... But not all programs are available and I have a few specialty ones that are not found...

For the $$$ the PC gives you MUCH more speed and memory and the programs are easy to find and lots of free-ware... But the memory is easily expandable and plug in's cost less and are easy to add... It also does a much better job of reading pheriphals such as external HD's, Camera info etc... I love how better my Photoshop runs on the PC then the MAC... But the virus risk is a REAL bummer!!!

So that is what I noticed... My hubby LOVES his MAC but underneath, I am still pretty plugged into my PC!!!

Mac has done a pretty good job of taking something that used to be aimed exclusively at photographers, graphic designers and video-editing folks and marketing it into a hipster consumer product.

Brand has a lot to do with the popularity of Macs - I doubt most of the people who use them really "need" them.

All joking aside, what is so much better about a Mac? What can it do that a pc can't? Why are they so expensive?

I don't think there is much of a difference these days - other than the software design of the OS and the build quality of the machines.

It doesn't seem like there is much software for Macs.

No - there is. Much the same stuff that you can get on the PC.

It used to be (years ago) that Photoshop, Quark etc required a Mac.

They're expensive because Apple has insisted on being BOTH a hardware and OS vendor for a relatively small market share.

That means their R&D costs for their hardware and software groups need to be amortized by a smaller number of users, hence a higher per-user price.

Whenever you want to own a status product that has a small number of users you're going to pay more for that privilege (think Rolex, Lamborghini etc. that push that image intentionally). Apple is a somewhat less extreme example of the same phenomenon. Note that it doesn't necessarily make them better. A Toyota is probably going to be more reliable than a Lamborghini, and a Swatch gets the same job done as Rolex.

PC for me

Used MAC mostly back in college days, nowaday not much of a difference. IF you don't play with if it for awhile it feels weird palying with one, to close a window you have to click upper left instead of rigth

Built 2 pc myself, 1 xeon 3.8ghz with 6Gig Memory

1 Opteron 2.8ghz with 4Gig Memory

Between these 2 fellas, there's nothing i can't run with a decent speed.
