A pig for a cat??? Must have been some Haitian refugee looking for a sacrifice for the voodoo dance that night!

A Florida woman says her neighbor, a Vietnam veteran, shot her cat four times.

"I heard a loud bang -- like a metal bang -- followed by a horrific cat scream," Margaret Wetzel says.

The 20-pound feline, Harry, must have lost one of his nine lives, but is "doing well" since the bullets went into his rump, mostly his fat.

Wetzel says her 77-year-old neighbor told her that he thought it was a pig and offered to pay the veterinarian bills, which are now more than $5,000. She hopes charges are pressed.

Where did Slim get the idea that he thought it was a pig because of bad eyesight? I would imagine this Vietnam vet is suffering from rather more than blurry vision to make this kind of an error - beside which, even if he did think it was a pig, why did he think he should be shooting it? Surely phoning the animal rescue services would have been a more sensible course of action?

As for legal recourse, the law does not view pets as anything more than possessions, so if the vets bills are more than the cat is worth, the guy will not be asked to pay them.

Wild hogs are dangerous and usually "fair game" while on your own property in places like Florida. He probably looked out the window, saw the big fat cat and thought it was a pig that was farther away. He could've mistaken the small (if you call 22lbs. small!) cat at 30 yards for a pig at 100 yards. From his vantage point, the distance, background, light, anything, could've tricked him. It happens.

Calling animal rescue services for a wild pig would be like calling them to come save an alligator. Sure, they'd probably do it but it wouldn't be to save the animal... it would be to save the humans!
