I did make time to study her platform - if she can get done even 40 percent of what she wants to do, Houston'll be a thrivin well into 2050, just from what she's gonna do these 4 years.

You have the right attitude. Good decision!

We can safely disregard your political opinions with a campaign endorsement like that. Now you know where all the messiah talk came from in the first place on your friend in the White House.

So, Houston has bragging rights to an openly gay mayor. This is what makes people happy these days?

Apparently, she's the first, ever, in the CONUS. Mondo Cool, I think.

She's certainly not the first (for example Cicilline was elected mayor of Providence, RI in 2002). To this European boy, it seems a lot of fuss over nothing.

I know that religion plays a large part in demonising homosexuality here, but that doesn't really don't explain why so many Americans seem to be SO scared of gays. If it wasn't so sad it would be funny.

I know highly educated people here who close their eyes and pull faces to avoid watching a gay kiss on TV! They honestly think that being gay is a matter of choice and that gays are lurking in the shadows, waiting for an opportunity to turn their straight children to the "darkside". Idiots.

I think some of the VJ court jesters here put way too much emphasis on the ** angle of the Houston mayoral election in a conservative state of Texas as if it is some sort of historical milestone that validates their own personal obsessions with the importance of homosexuals and homosexuality in the world at large. Along with an erroneous assumption that the world at large has come to its senses and now embraces their own far Left values about homosexuality in American society.

Let's see....the population of Houston is 2,245,108.

http://www.houstontx.gov/planning/Demographics/dem_links.htm

And only 81,971 voted for her out of the abysmal 155,302 votes cast in this so called historic mayoral election? Out of a city of 2,245,108?

http://www.chron.com/apps/ElectionPub/loca...lection_id=1047

This is more about voter apathy and a lack of quality candidates that represent what the electorate really wants. They took a look at what the local party machines offered in the general election and this is what it came down to in the runoffs. The electorate stayed home in droves. This is hardly the historic mandate that some of the clowns here on VJ crow about. Geez!

I agree that the turn out was awful (and frankly worrying), but it's a little bit disingenous to refer to the total population of 2.2 million. Don't forget that around 600,000 of those are under 18 and so unable to vote. That's before you consider non U.S. citizens and convicted fellons on probabtion or parole. Yes, the turn out is still awful - but not quite as bad as you make out.

Isn't the whole purpose of electing officials so we can get someone to represent us? Is this the "us" they've become in Houston?

On that basis, does Obama only represent African-Americans? Did Sarah Palin only represent Hockey Moms?

They've elected a politician who happens to be gay. Why should the fact that she's gay define her term as mayor? If she devotes all her efforts to gay & lesbian groups and issues, then I'll eat my words. But she won't do that.

She'll work for everyone in Houston - gay or straight, black or white, man or woman. Sure, nobody will like ALL her work - but NO politician is afforded that luxury).

Because the usual suspects have made the homosexual angle of the election into some sort of mandate on homosexuality.

You could also slide down that slippery slope by declaring that her black opponent lost the election due to racism.

A lot depends on how people want to spin anything for their own personal agenda.

I'd say Palin represents Hockey Moms a little better than Obama represents African-Americans.

Is this new mayor representitive of the population of Houston?

It has to with tolerance of gays, peejay. There are plenty of Texans, such as yourself who have a low regard for homosexuals in general. To pretend this election is nothing major is ignoring your own bigotry.

My apologies, I'm not 'dipping' into the 'homosexual' argument at all.

Sorry if it seemed that way.

I don't consider anyone's sexual 'affiliation', ever - though many do. I think it's a form of discrimination, actually. But - you'll not see me standing up at any rally, demanding equal rights about it, either.

I think she's gonna do a good job as mayor, because of her prior experience, political connections, and commercial connections. That's it.

No, I'm not naive, not at all. Just not gonna 'dip' into the 'homosexual' stance that MANY FOLK (not VJers ) have already chosen, so to do.

I'm not a liberal or a conservative, I don't play with red vs blue states demographics - it's near impossible to put one 'label' on me. Whew!

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

I'm not scared of gays. I've had gay friends all my life. It's not a matter of being scared of gays; it's a matter of being sick of stupid liberals and their worship of identity politics. I don't understand how just being gay qualifies you for political office. Hey! Vote for ____________, he fvcks in the #### and loves big cajones! is not very a very persuasive campaign slogan for some of us. I don't understand publically celebrating how you **, but that's me.
