Hi, everyone--

I am interested to hear whether anyone's unaccompanied fiance has had problems at the POE because their US fiance did not accompany them-- just want to understand if there is any risk with him entering the US without me....

Here's the background: my fiance (K1) is moving to the US next weekend as both of our families that live in the US will be with us for Christmas and New Years.

I had very much wanted to accompany him through the immigration line as I do not want him to have any issues-- our POE would be Miami or Atlanta. He and I have both travelled internationally quite a bit for work and pleasure, but he has never been to the US before and does not speak much English. He says he is fine to travel here by himself and doesn't think we should waste money on my flight, but I am concerned that if he has to answer questions it could be complicated due to the language and may not look good because I am not there.

Here's the issue: to fly to Lima is a 24-30hour+ roundtrip for me and as I cannot take off more than 2 days in a row before Christmas due to some major projects, so I would have to land in Lima and get right back on a plane with him and go straight to work when we land. Neither of us think that is a good idea.

We discussed meeting up in another country (Panama, Costa Rica, Bahamas where we have vacationed before) since I could do those flights in a shorter time and maybe even same day if I never left the airport. However, I am not sure it is worth having a long, complicated itinerary and spending an extra $2000 to do this.

I am interested to hear whether anyone's unaccompanied fiance has had problems at the POE because their US fiance did not accompany them-- just want to understand if there is any risk with him entering the US wihtout me.

Thanks very much for your help!!

I don't think many people have problems at POE for not having the USC with them, more for the packages being open or new police checks coming up on them, that sort of thing. Basically all they are doing at POE is checking all the documentation to make sure its in order and right, and if it is there shouldnt be any issues. If its not, I don't forsee them giving any grief simply because the USC wasn't there. That said it may goes easier for some to have the USC there due to language barriers for instructions. Plus if they are entering at a POE where you are, they can indicate you are on the other side of the barrier waiting for them.

hej1 ~ Miami is a good POE for him, my husband and I came through Miami and the immigration officials spoke Spanish. Be aware though, if he is going to have a layover give it at least 2 hours, we got held up in immigration and missed our connecting flight. If this happens, they will put you on the next connecting flight no problem FYI

As a matter of fact, my husband is going to Peru for 2 weeks in Jan and his layover is in Miami. He's a little worried because he's never flown by himself but I think if he has a layover in any airport it will be easiest in Miami where everybody speaks spanish.

Good luck! :star:

My K1 and K2 entered the States by themselves - no problems.

Good luck.

I did accompany Elena home, we came through Atlanta. It is a very easy and simple process there lots of people to assist so it should be no problem. The line took us 2 hrs, the actual process with immigration people 5 minutes (: ...

Good Luck

My then fiance (now husband) attended his sister's wedding in New York a very few days before I flew to the U.S. I was alone but LAX didn't mind. I had my passport with the I-94 in less than 5 minutes from the time I handed them and the visa packet to the proper authority. The guy just opened the packet and skimmed through its contents, asked me two questions, reminded me to get married within 90 days, and congratulated me. Next thing... I was already at the baggage claim area.

The only problems people have reported with getting through POE is when they do something bone headed like refer to their fiancee as their "wife" when they are coming in on a K-1 (Hint: being married makes you ineligible for K-1 visa). Otherwise, it's pretty difficult to make yourself ineligible to enter the country when you're holing a K-1 visa.

As others have said, there will be translators - your fiance isn't the only one who goes through there who doesn't speak much English. Since he is comfortable, save your money for other things, and meet him eagerly at the airport!

I came through immigration with my fiancee' but I was not allowed to be with her at the desk. I was processed first then told to leave and wait at the baggage claim area (POE was LAX). She was processed alone and with no problems (thank you God). So I don't really think your presence will be any good for immigration. As long as the papers are in order and untouched from the embassy, you should have no issues.
