Hello everyone.

I am from the UK and have a full UK licence. I have passed my MN drivers ed and have my test booked for the 14th.

Question, can I drive in a car on my own with my UK licence and my yellow slip that shows I have passed the drivers ed?

Or, if not, under what terms can I drive. I live in Minnesota and my wife is 19.

I'm not exactly sure what this yellow slip is. You need a valid Minnesota DL to legally drive in MN. Your foreign DL can only be used if you do not meet the residency requirements for MN. I would assume you do.

The yellow slip I got after I passed the drivers ed. I went to the DMV and sat infront of the screen, had 40 questions and got at least 32 right. Now all I need to do is pass my driving test. That is on the 14th but I need to practice, so can I drive our car and if so under what conditions.

A "yellow slip" isn't a driver's license. What exactly does it say? Is it a "learner's permit"?

I got it when i passed my drivers ed.

It's out in the car and it's cold but It's just a form that says I have passed my drivers ed. I know thats not much help but thats all it is.

I think it would be best to let your driving gloves collect a bit more dust until you have an official Minnesota DL in your hands (or out in the car).

She said I need to do my test before my K1 runs out or else I would have to show proof of applying for another visa such as an NOA1.

I'm so confused I may call the DMV tomorrow.

I would call the DMV and to clarify. You could always practice with your wife in the car and then they cannot say anything. I would tend to think it is enough. Oh and when I drove in Australia I always made a humorous point as I went down the road to tell myself. "remember the driver should be on the side of the car closest to the center of the road." It sounds dumb, but that way I didn't drive on the wrong side of the road, lol. It didn't help my going to use my turn signal and getting the windshield wipers, but at least I never drove on the wrong side of the road. Good luck.

I tried to call but of course their offices are closed. Might just be calling too early.

I wish I had more chance to practice some of the manoeuvres. Hopefully it will all go well on Monday. It's not fair, I have been through all this drivers test stuff back in the UK, Ha.

Snow is not helping either.

Hi, I am from Minnesota and I already took my written test. That "yellow slip" you can drive with someone with driver's license.

I do not have the driver's license in the Phil so I need to wait until 90 days (3 months) after my written test to have my road test as in the MN DMV handbook, even I know how to drive now.

Did you show your NOA1? I received a withdrawal of my Instructional Permit because I didn't shown my NOA1, I talked to DMV costumer representative if necessary to give the copy of my NOA1 and he said he do not know until I received the withdrawal, so what I did was gave the noa1 copy and I was able to fill up another form, picture taking and signature. Better to show them the NOA1 or else you will receive a withdrawal before your I-94 expire.

It would be simple and she has been with me whenever I have driven anywhere but she has been working a lot and works until Monday so she can't take me out to practice manoeuvres.

I will figure it out. I just thought it would be cool to practice while she is working as I have all the time in the world. Ha.

To be honest, I see your MN learners permit as a red-herring. It doesn't replace your UK licence.

You arrived in the US in October 2009 right? And you have a full UK licence? Well just as if you were a tourist on vacation, you can drive here using your UK licence, on your own and without any need to have an MN licenced adult with you. Officially you can only do that for a certain period of time (here in CO it's 6 months, but in other states it seems to be longer), but if you've only been here since October you have months to play with.

The only real concern is insurance. Just make sure your spouse's insurance cover allows any licenced person (including a UK licence holder) to drive her car.
